Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, architect, philosopher and scientist.

I guess he was the greatest all. A one man band.

Undeniably Bill Gates.
Ok, there may be a few scientists like Einstein and Hawks who are original thinkers and so on.

Bill Gates in comparison is more like Newton who also pirated most ideas as in his own words: ".. it’s because I stood on the shoulders of giants".

In fact, Newton is close to great as he somehow assembled all those many "observations" floating around and reduced them to simple laws some of which I didn't quite get. For instance in high school, it was calculus - they told me it works.

Then our Bill Gates with his Windows; now we cut, drag & drop the universe on Excel; who needs calculus.

I choose #3: The person who uses correct English grammar. /sarc

One uses a comparative adjective when talking about just two people, not a superlative adjective.

Pythagoras

Beliefs:

that at its deepest level, reality is mathematical in nature,

The Pythagorean ... having been brought up in the study of mathematics, thought that things are numbers ... and that the whole cosmos is a scale and a number.

Each number had its own personality - masculine or feminine, perfect or incomplete, beautiful or ugly. This feeling modern mathematics has deliberately eliminated, but we still find overtones of it in fiction and poetry. Ten was the very best number: it contained in itself the first four integers - one, two, three, and four [1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10] - and these written in dot notation formed a perfect triangle.

Probably isn't one great one.

There are so many ideas by so many great thinkers who all base their work off of the greats who came before them that its too grand of a question to answer

I'd say God is the greatest cause we're sill, after thousands of years of philosophizing and discovering scientific ideas, trying to unravel his universe and even understand who he is and what he wants.

If you really study who did what, there is only one who stands above all the rest. He is Newton. He invented calculus to solve other problems. He was an expert in optics when optics didn't exist. He combined math and physics to create laws, not theories. He was an expert in chemistry, theology, and history.

The volume of scientific work originated by him would fill many lifetimes. There is a whole class of physics named for him; Newtonian physics, which literally wrote the book on gravity until Einstein came along but still works in most applications.

The problem with this question is that all the geniuses we can think of rely or relied on thinking that was done before them. Whoever you think is the worlds biggest genius wouldn't have been able to do any of the things they did if others hadn't already contributed what they did. And, alot of the contributions they rely on were from people that "weren't geniuses".
There's also the fact that so many of the geniuses out there have never been recognized, and/or they've been suppressed. We only think of the people that've been recognized, and their names have been spread. Alot of "geniuses" are just people taking the credit for what others do. Edison, for instance, almost always credited others for the genius they did, but the press and our schools only push the name Edison.

...and they should give me the Nobel prize for Medicine because I don't live that far from Stockholm City Hall, where they hand out the prizes, it would save them all that expense of having to fly someone in. bigsmile
