Okay. Okay. I know I am a little late in the game, but does anyone currently use it?
I really don't want to pay $30 plus a month for a home phone, when it's just basically for emergencies and important calls at home. |

Magic Jack and Vonage are both voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services. I believe Ooma and clearwire are too but don't quote me on that. Basically if you have dialup internet don't do it. If you have Cable internet or high speed (high bandwidth) internet I'd go with any of these except magic jack. For some reason the audio reproduction isn't good at all it echoes... No good. Another thing to keep in mind is if your internet goes out or there's a power outage your phone won't work with any of these. Dump the landline and good luck trying to keep your old number. Took my parents almost a month for at&t to release theirs and Vonage is part of at&t...

As it would be a standalone unit( not a part of your computer) I'm guessing it would work fine. Just insert the magicjack into your router and it should work on its own. I don't know of any of my clients that use it and would be interested in hearing how it works out for you.thanks.

Here in the UK you can buy a cheap mobile (cell) phone off Ebay for 15/20 GBP including a charger, brand new old models, and a Pay As You Go SIM costs only a few more pounds, and if it is only to receive calls it should cost you no more than that, just a thought. |

I tried it a while back, and I found it useless. It worked, and the sound was just like a regular phone,even but even when I set up a separate computer dedicated JUST to the phone, it would go offline every few minutes. Useless for incoming calls altogether. Because it's dependent on SOFTWARE, and the software depends on the Operating system, and on the browser, and so far, no one makes a reliable one of either one of those.
I have heard rumors that they fixed that problem with new stand-alone units, but I am not interested in spending the money again to find out. |

straight talk offers a $15 a month unlimited land line plan of course you have to buy the box first

Their latest models do not require a PC, so no software to install. All you need to do is to connect it to your modem and your phone. Sound quality is pretty good.
I bought the MagicJackGo from BestBuy recently for ~$50 and it includes one year of service. There is also a MagicJackExpress from their web site. It sells for ~$40 with 3 months of service. |

As long as you have a good high speed internet connection it works fine. |
