the evening was dark, dank and cold... all was quiet as she went about tidying the house after a long day.. out of the darkness the sounds of a loud 'bang' like that of metal hitting metal.. she races to the front door as the dog starts barking wildly.. upon opening the door.. her nostrals are accosted by a pungent metalic odor.. the sounds were like that of a loud scraping.. as if the body of the car was being dragged along the pavement.. as she approaches.. she sees parts of a bumper.. metal and plastic intertwined.. looking grotesque in the shadows created from the house flood lights.. the closer she approaches the highways edge.. the stronger the smell.. instinctively she covers her mouth and nose with her sweater sleeve.. flashlight in hand.. she looks right towards where the vehicle is now parked on the soft shoulder.. 4 ways flashing.. standing out brightly on the highways darkened soft shoulder.. the drivers door opens.. shouts exchanged "is everyone ok?" "yeah.. a lil shaken but good" "what happened?" she asks..."hit a deer" comes the quiet reply.. she turns her head to the left.. now noting the debis of bone and fur mingled with blood and guts streaked along the road.. ending in a grotesque heap of what was just moments before.. a beautiful young doe... her life ended because he "was tired from work and just wanted to get home" ... the police arrived .. made their report.. and waited with the driver until the tow truck arrived.. emotionally exhausted.. she turned to the warmth & comfort of her home.. yet found none.. nor did she find solace in sleep.. rising late.. she dressed and left the house for her morning walk with the dog.. only to discover the carnage in the light of dawn.. she turns right at the end of the driveway.. walking away from the gorey scene... the walk completed.. she returns the dog to the house.. then walks over to wehre the deer is laying broken and mangled.. she drops to her knees and allows the tears to finally flow.. acknowledging the loss.. freeing it's spirit.. to soar through the heavens.. home!
