VIDEO: Black Lives Matter co-creator tells UMD students capitalism opposes blacks

Alicia Garza, the social activist who coined #BlackLivesMatter, shared her views to a crowd of more than 500 at the University of Maryland on Tuesday.
During her talk she told the students capitalism opposes and is bad for blacks.

Alicia Garza, the social activist who coined #BlackLivesMatter, shared her views on social activism, the modern-day civil rights movement, and capitalism to a crowd of more than 500 at the University of Maryland on Tuesday.

“What does capitalism, to the extent that it can be considered in such simplistic terms, stand to gain from the oppression or disenfranchisement of anyone, but especially of black people,” Campus Reform asked Garza during an open question and answer session.

At first, Garza seemed to not understand the question, but after it was rephrased as “does capitalism oppose blacks?” she managed a chuckle and responded, simply, “yes.”

Garza restated the question asking, “s capitalism is bad for blacks? Yes!”

“Black folks were the first currency in this country,” she continued as the audience applauded with a mixture of claps and finger snaps. "When you have a system that’s built off buying and selling human beings, and forcing through violence...those human beings to provide free labor that generates a lot of wealth, not just for people but for entire nations, and then locks out of [sic] access to basic human needs...there's something very wrong with that system.”

The activist added that she believes black capitalism—the notion of supporting black owned goods and services—is not a solution to empower blacks and that America needs a completely different system.

“I don’t think that by making more black elites that we are going to shift that, so black capitalism is not the answer to that,” she said. “We need a different economic system that does not prioritize profits over people.”

Noting that black men are the mostly likely to be killed by police, that black women are the most likely to be sexually assaulted by a police officer, and that black trans women are most likely to be targeted as sex workers, Garza claimed that many of the travesties she and Black Lives Matter aim to combat are the result of state-sanctioned violence.

“Many people are impacted by state-sanctioned violence and police violence is not the only way that that plays out,” she announced. “State-sanctioned violence looks like patriarchy, it looks like trans phobia, it looks like trans panic is a legal defense to killing another human being. It’s sanctioned by the state.”

In regard to the controversial deaths of Freddie Gray and Trayvon Martin, Garza noted that “every time a black person is killed by the police, they’re called a thug.” She also contrasted criticism of her movement to the Cliven Bundy standoff, a land dispute between a white male rancher in Nevada and the U.S. government.

“Cliven Bundy went on television and encouraged his supporters to shoot back at the government,” she observed. “Now, he’s alive, he’s free; but that’s not true for black folks.”

At one point, Garza encouraged audience members to immediately take out their phones and sign Black Lives Matters’ petition for a Black Lives Matter presidential debate.

“We want to know, do you believe that black lives matter?” she said.

Garza’s visit was a part of the University of Maryland’s “Rise Above ‘-isms’” week, a campaign run by the school’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion that strives to educate students about the harmful nature of “-isms” like racism and sexism.

Over 26 different university offices co-hosted the event, including the College of Education, the UM School of Public Health, and the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

Capitalism is bad for blacks. Hilarious. So the idea that blacks should strive for wealth, or should be consumers, or should be producers of goods and services is bad?

Wow. So I guess we better alert the NAACP to shut down. All minority places of learning must be closed immediately and students sent to fully integrated campuses to learn skills they'll never get paid for.

The entertainment industry? Starting immediately all shows featuring black performers will be free to the public, and the performers shall not be paid for their time and talent. Music, movies, TV shows, comedy shows? All free. BET? Turn off the cameras, and lock the doors on the Apollo Theatre.

Sports? Jeez, where do you start? Baseball, basketball, football, all must immediately revert back to 1940, with white guys and latinos as the only ones playing the game for cash.

Factory workers, doctors, lawyers, plumbers, electricians, any African American in the U.S.A. starting tomorrow gets ZERO dollars for their labor. Oh, but they'll also not be allowed to buy or sell anything. At best, they could engage in bartering for food and shelter.

Yeah, THAT'LL work. Ms. Garza? You are a special kind of stupid, but thanks for coming out.

just shows the intelligence level of the BLM founders, and sadly, other ignorant blacks will blindly follow for no other reason than "they are black"...

Absolute lunacy- as if an entire system & culture needs to change because of two cranky people, trying to convince 13%- 16% of the population it should.

And the comment on the video that slavery was American's first currency.
Oh please! .. slaphead

interesting perspective

interesting point about bundy and his ranch too

whether someone is a gun carrying patriot or a perceived threat,,,,often can correlate to what their gender and race are,,,

whether someone is a gun carrying patriot or a perceived threat,,,,often can correlate to what their gender and race are,,,
------------
Oooh...'Obamanation Speak 'allow me to interpret for those overseas & unprogramed.

'gun carrying patriot'= American legal citizens who are also , legal gun owners who are law abiding citizens & support the 2nd amendment to buy, own, carry & are willing to shoot to defend themselves, their families & their property.
* Usually white & or veterans or (original) Constitutionalist, or businesses owners.

'perceived threat'= criminals - any & all, past & present.
who may or may not have some kind of weapon (which is irrelevant ).
But if they do... it is almost always illegal & stolen, from other criminals (but not from legal gun owners).

....often can correlate with their gender & race...

Correlate = crime statistics by population ratio:
crimes committed, those convicted & imprisoned.
Gender = male
Race = black

Majority of criminals killed by police or receive death penalty by population ratio = male, white

* Of course none of this ^^^ has to do with Capitalism & race.. but damn the co founder of BLM didn't make understand the question..& I am just translating ... " don't shoot me, no matter what I do " *

thanks for the translation

in our country, there is the 'right' to carry a weapon,,, but often what race you are , in lieu of a police record being attached to your body wherever you go, can cause those with authority to take lives(police) to see you as a threat instead of someone exercising their rights,,,

One only has to take a good look at Africa to see what works ... and what doesn't.

If black lives matter so much why do they kill so many of their own? And why is it never addressed except to be blamed on racism even tho all parties are black?

I heard an interesting story on "Black Lives Matter" that had the theory that, if taken on by the Democratic Party (which is what happened) it would consolidate the black vote for Hillery even though she doesn't have the appeal of Obama.

Carson is a danger to the Democrats. He could cancel the block vote of the blacks and negate the "stay at home" problem with the conservatives.

I have the impression (anecdotally) that most black people dislike Carson, but I could be wrong cause I've not seen any real data.

it is addressed through something called the JUSTICE SYSTEM,, the issue is getting that same system to address it when police are the ones taking the lives,,,

Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned.

The recognition of individual rights entails the banishment of physical force from human relationships: basically, rights can be violated only by means of force. In a capitalist society, no man or group may initiate the use of physical force against others. The only function of the government, in such a society, is the task of protecting man's rights, i.e., the task of protecting him from physical force; the government acts as the agent of man's right of self-defense, and may use force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use; thus the government is the means of placing the retaliatory use of force under objective control.

Ooh..like most people who are killed by cops are white men... Yes, by population ratio.
Black men that are killed are resiting arrest & fleeing with cops with prior criminal records.
But usually black men just kill black ...people. Which is why there are more black men in jail..by population ratio.

slaphead these stats have been posted out here a million times. .. Well, maybe 5 times in 7 months.
Saying other wise...
Over & over, won't change the FBI stats or anymone else's.

We really need more Asians to set an example. smitten

O.k. there is a right to carry a weapon unless you have committed crimes that by law prevent you from carrying a weapon.

that as essentially the difference.. thus law abiding citizen and criminal

How many of the blacks killed this year in gun fights with police or their own kind were actually carrying licensed guns?.. How many MSH

I hate to break the news to you but your Bro's are packing and using stolen guns. To use against anyone who gets in the way of them.. especially there fellow black folks... they are literally killing each other

BTW, any word on Malcolm's 10,000 security guys?...the ones who were going to police their own.. clean up the mess. Restore order to their neighborhoods...take the guns from the thugs.. not coming...heh
