Tow truck owner said he refused service to woman because she supports Bernie Sanders

Dal Kalsi, Adrian Acosta
May 5, 2016

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) - A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he could’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders’ supporters.

Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.

“I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” Shupe said Wednesday.

The woman’s mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.

"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."

Below is Kelle McWade’s public post:

Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).

Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."

Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.

"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.

Shupee’s Used Cars LLC is in no way connected to Shupee Max Towing, and has nothing to do with the incident.

Same mindset as florists and bakers who don't want to do gay weddings, same mindset as folks who didn't want blacks to sit at their lunch counters. Forward into the past.

Well political affiliation isn't a civil right yet.... but give the SJW 'tards some time to work on it....right now, all they can do is run quickly to Facebook...just like the mom in the OP did.

Suing? Criminals? No laws were broken.
I, personally, would have made the tow. But, I'm not this particular business owner. He expressed concern over not getting paid so he turned the job down. His business, his call. Not mine, yours, or anyone else's.

Get a car towed lately? Most want cash or CC up front or bye bye.
Unless it's a wreck then they get paid by county or city who will shift charge to you.

Having been in business for myself I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. That said; I am not such a dumb arse to shoot my mouth off as to why.

I have a feeling that the person expecting to be towed has and actionable complaint if this tow truck driver accepted the referrals for the run without and "out" clause for refusing the tow with out cause (safety or non-payment most over view agencies have a dim view of abusing the privilege of having a very lucrative tow license by being petty) and since the insurance made the referral that may not be well received there either. At the very least he has just lost an important source of referrals since I doubt he ask if there was and exclusion for political beliefs and insurers don't like hassles about having a policy owner getting the run around.

If you start trying to dictate other peoples lifestyles weather it is race, religion, finances, politics, or what goes on behind closed doors to name a few you are shrinking the pool you have for customers and sooner or later you are more than likely going to be out of business.

And in this country you do have to to deal with the government weather you like it or not. And just because the guy slid on a technical the bad press is likely to have a serious chilling effect on his profit margin when the majority of people have had their chops busted by someone who did not exactly like their life choices. Telling a woman how to vote sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Its his "recipe for disaster"..... or, maybe, people like minded will keep him a float.... his choice to make, no one else's.

a gay wedding is an event people opt out of, being black is not an event,,and unless she asked him to tow her to a liberal event, her action has nothing to do with her request either

but,, turning down money over a bumper sticker or a politician is stupid,,and his loss

good to get it out there ,, for all involved,,,

That was my initial reaction.

I also thought it is a comical, that the mommy of a grown woman HAD the need to make it public. And she assumed the tow truck driver was a Trump supporter & must be a bigot, because her baby girl felt rejected & had a bad day.

Well.. That's life. Where was baby girl headed anyway with all those signs...? Hhhaa. To a protest to call people, like the tow truck driver names? This was ASHEVILLE, NC.. And North Carolina has been harassed & boycotted (by the LGBT etc), for months.

The best part is, mommy doesn't realize her baby girl being called 'a socialist' is the insult to both of them.
