* Every culture, isolated or integrated has had religious beliefs.
* Many started in the depths of foggy history and most have modernized with flexibility.
* If the religion dampens conflict within a family and is culturally acceptable it is seen as healthy.flowerforyou

You are correct. Religion is pernicious with its rules and shall nots. A relationship with God is different. Yes there is a God. To believe that this whole thing was a chance happening would equate with believing a tornado in a junk yard might produce a working 777. Leaving out that tower of intellect Stephen Hawkins saying that because of the law of Gravity the universe needed to be created therefor it created itself. Sounds like a used car salesman trying to sell and old Pinto as a classic, because it is old and should be a classic and therefor is. I believe that is called "circular reasoning".

As well as any reasoning pattern would be circular. As there are several outcomes and several ways to look at any given situation. Which is why the marriage band is circular and unending.

I guess the obvious role of religion in relationships
is to guide believers to chastity, morality and forgiveness?

everything began with an apple , life on earth started with an apple , yet no one knows weather it was red or green , scientists still examine its remains using radioactive carbon ....

In a relationship, personal, and religious views should be a close match at the least. If there are conflicts, they can cause problems in the future.
My secular humanist views are in direct conflict with the evangelical
perspective, and if a couple does not come close to having a matched personal philosophy, there is a strong possibility for problems.

I can see that "religion" is a trigger word for a fair number of people. All that some can think of, are the various people who have used religious organization to put limits on other people.

A better word to use, which is more accurate, would be philosophy. That is actually the primary and central reason for religions, the rule sets and trappings of earthly power, are all just add-ons, that impatient second-rate thinkers came up with, to try to force everyone else "for their own good" to follow the core philosophy.

When you look at this question as "the role of personal beliefs in relationships," you can immediately recognize that it is perhaps the MOST important element in all of them.

Even someone who is assertively anti-religious, needs to be with someone who's own personal beliefs match up with theirs, if the relationship is to thrive.

Please don't mind the specific religion reference. But it is very important for spouses to share common spiritual beliefs, either sharing having them or sharing not having them for the following reason.

2 Corinthians 6
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

love the above.
i think someone has said to succeed in any relationship it is better if the couple have the same principles or philosophy or believe.
