State Rep: Declaration of Independence Is Racist
A bill mandating that schoolchildren in Louisiana be taught the Declaration of Independence is being opposed by a state lawmaker. Louisiana State Rep. Barbara Norton (D) said, "For the Declaration of Independence, only Caucasians [were] free. And for you to bring a bill to request that our children will recite the Declaration, I think it's a little bit unfair." On "Fox and Friends Weekend," Deneen Borelli slammed Norton's "outrageous" argument, explaining the founding documents of the United States of America are the blueprint for our great country. "For her to be attacking the Declaration of Independence, that is attacking liberty, that is attacking freedom," Borelli said. She added that the Democratic Party, of which Norton is a member, doesn't exactly have the strongest record on slavery and race relations throughout U.S. history. "People should not let her get away with this." http://insider.foxnews.com/2016/05/28/louisiana-state-representative-barbara-norton-declaration-independence-racist/ * Video on link * |

She brought all the attention on to herself when she publicly declared it. She attacked The Construction of The United States, of course people are going to pay attention. |

sad thing is that she swore an oath to uphold it... didn't bill clinton get impeached for breaking an oath he swore on?

Ironically, one of the reasons why the Declaration wasn't voted the force of law, is because it was a direct attack on the concepts of slavery.
It remains a document which has no legal standing in the country to this day. |

Here is this idiot's rambling comments on the Louisiana House floor.... http://youtu.be/uNiiFOj2lEc .....sad that she was even elected in the first place....hasn't even mastered the English language. Wow, she's probably a closet anarchist. Fire her ***. Just saw her ramble. She should be fired. As a representative who has sworn to uphold the constitution she has failed. She is confused. She is saying because she sees racial inequality, the Constitution is invalid. She does not understand that the Constitution is a construction map for a nation. She keeps bringing up the fact that in 1776 Dr. Martin Luther King was not born. To many African Americans, they were not realy freed until the civil rights efforts were made by King. Ergo, she is confused. |

By the way, while we're discussing it, has anyone else noticed what triggered this nonsensical outburst?
Bill HB 1035. It's not AS nuts as the woman who protested as described, but it's right up there. It is designed to require all students to recite a passage from the Declaration as though it is a morning prayer, every day. That's got nothing to do with teaching the history and the importance of the United States in the world, that's political grandstanding nonsense by some OTHER local political idiots down there, who ALSO need to be called out for making a mockery of the Declaration. |

Well we used to do the pledge of allegiance every day. Someone complained and said it was too much of a prayer.. now it's gone. |

I don't understand the view of this woman. Is she suggesting ALL history shouldn't be taught and should be ignored during the time when "only Caucasians [were] free"?
Putting what I feel is an idiotic objection to reciting any historical document aside I see this as positive and productive. Memorizing and reciting something is a powerful tool to retain what is learned. If nothing else this will help kids develop the ability to use that tool. Things like a survey done in 2012 that found 1 in 3 Americans questioned would fail the country's citizenship test for immigrants shows that memorizing learned information, especially civics and history, has not been a priority. As a naturalized citizen I found the survey disturbing and hard to believe since ALL of the material on the test I learned after immigrating to the US when I was 12 and in the 7th grade. But that was back in the mid 60's when memorization was used as a teaching/learning tool. How many young adults today can't do simple multiplication, are lost without using an electronic device, because they never had to memorize multiplication tables? I'm not saying that technological tools shouldn't be used. I'm saying that the original computer, the brain, needs to be utilized to store information for future use. I will admit that I am guilty of not using my memory as much as I used to. I think the only phone number I have memorized now is my own. |

And she mentioned Martin Luther King Jr.. But evidently she never read anything he said.
Or she is done kind of.. Destructor & what's to shread everything. ". the majestic words of The Declaration of Independence. " "... the American dream and the scared values of our Judeo-Christian heritage. " . ."...democracy which were dug deep by the founding fathers in the formulation of the Constitution and The Declaration of Independence. |

technically, it referred to 13 states and the british
but we are big on formality here in the states so,,,nyeh I don't see why the pledge of allegiance isn't enough,,personally if its an optional thing,, it makes sense if its mandated, its kind of illogical what portion will they recite,, certainly not the whole thing? |

""Requires local school boards to require students in grades four through six to recite a specified passage from the Declaration of Independence (EG NO IMPACT LF EX See Note)"" http://legiscan.com/LA/bill/HB1035/2016 Idk which "passage" though and I ain't downloading the PDF to find out if its a certain one or they pick one...feel free to though and let us know lol. We have more pressing issues to tackle ATM but weird bills are nothing new. I hinted at this somewhere before but an earlier bill about setting a minimum age for strippers had an addendum added to it wanting all strippers to weigh 160lbs or less...I kid you not After being called on it, the rep who added it tried to play it off as a joke. Yea...Riiiiiiiight lol We have some real winners here. |
