Camping = Nearest Hilton Hotel... I used to love camping. It was fun to be away and relax. Talk with friends, enjoy the crackle of the fire. But over the years it became a chore to get everything packed, unpacked, setup, cleaned, put away... lost the relaxing part. Doesn't help that I have back problems and sleeping was a major issue. Thus, the hotel preference... Guess I turned into a curmudgeon on camping. But it can be very enjoyable. Now days, I would only do a trailer. Idaho does have some beautiful locations to camp so if you have a chance, go try it and see for yourself. It's takes me about 45 minutes to pack.that includes the wood... set up about 30 minutes. Breakdown the same putting away 30 much less time. rest of the time relaxing. Theven one concession I have is my air mattress it is a queen pillow top. That is am spoiled on... but hey I will take the Hilton great gyms and spas...

I will pass on the scorpion concern... thanks.  If it's not a little dangerous, it's a yawn. For me the desert is like a whole different planet. I can see why shamen come to the desert to have truths revealed to them.

And you say you're in Alaska... I have to question if that's true. I don't know any women in Alaska that would be caught camping with a pillow top mattress. Hahaha Well if you do the setup, including my KING size pillow top air mattress, maybe I would go. I just need to figure out how to keep the campfire smoke from always following me wherever I sit... Until then, I will take the room service surf and turf dinner, comfy robes and turn down service! hahaha

I camp quite a bit. So, this is a good question for me. I typically go out for a month at a time without need for supplies of any kind. I bring my own food, water, gas, propane, etc, etc, etc. First, I enjoy being by myself. It's quiet and peaceful. I love listening to the wind through the pine trees. I never tell anybody where or when I'm going. I return when it happens. Second, I hike, fish, rock climb, swim, wade, look at Petroglyphs and Pictographs, check out ghost towns, check out old indian ruins, and take lots of pictures. Third, I drive. I like to take remote 4X4 paths, sometimes not wide enough for my vehicle. It has become horribly scratched. I usually get stuck but I have always been able to get myself out. Once I was stuck at 10K+ feet for 2.5 weeks in deep snow. It took that long to get 1.5 miles due to digging out every 20 - 30' or so. Fourth, I enjoy watching wildlife. It is fun to track animals and sneak up as close as possible to see how they react. It is surprising how many animals have poor eye site. If you approach from down wind you can usually get very close. Fifth, I typically get injured as I like to do stupid stuff. It's fun at the time but I pay for it later. I had to give up my dirt bike because I was just too irresponsible with it. Last time I was camping/hiking, it was at Yosemite and my "outdoorsman, camping loving" brother who knew better, left some crystal light packets in his backpack.  Work up about 3am with a black bear 4 feet away rummaging through his pack looking for the food... Haven't been camping since... |

Work up about 3am with a black bear 4 feet away rummaging through his pack looking for the food... Haven't been camping since... Ha!Ha! That type of stuff is why I stay entirely away from camp grounds. Many people leave their garbage behind and train the bears to equate food with humans. "Camp Bears" have zero fear of people. True wild black bears won't have anything to do with humans. They are almost terrified of us. |

A lot of people say they like to go camping. What does everyone do when they go camping? my favourite part about camping revolves around the campfire..starting the firepit in the morning and sitting around it having my morning coffee with Bailey's; cooking breakfast/lunches/dinner outside on the campfire; .. while I have a 5th wheel, it is used mainly for sleeping and the washroom access. I glamp, not camp.. |

I love to tent camp! :)
Upon arrival, I scope out the available sites, picking the one site that is just right for me - not too far from the water (boats), just enough shade for the noon hour, a good fire ring (or a place to set up my own), and a level spot for my two pole 12 x 12 x 6 ft high square dome tent. I rig my 7 x 9 screened pavilion opposite my tent. I set up my card table, four chairs, camp table and propane stove, and two five candle candlelabras. Cooler goes under the camp table. Preprepped food goes into which ever pot is required. Early to bed (if I am solo), early to rise to get the jump on the fish. Or, whip out the camera for nature photos, some plaster of paris and cardboard for an interesting track or two. Or, searching for arrowheads on an island in a lake nearby. A hike to stretch the legs and mind. Or, traversing the waters of a stream in a custom wooden boat I built with my own hands. In the early morning just before dawn listening to the world awakening - the gentle breezes, the evening insects quieting, the birds chirping, the rasping noise on the surface of your tent as Elsie the cow licks the dew off off it... *deep sigh* I love to go camping! And, it is four times the fun when you share your adventures with someone else. eldar |

Yes King size! It fits me well given that I am 6'4". Besides, if there is a lady in the campground that needs a comfy place to sleep, well, I have a spot to share and they will love that I have a servant to take care of my camping needs in you!

A lot of men say they like to go camping. Well what do you do? Turn off cell phone. Pitch a tent. (Shelter not in the pants. That tent may cone later.) Unpack wood from the truck. (Since you're not supposed to scavange for it anymore.) Start a fire. Start fishing in the cooler trying to catch a buzz. |

camping....hmmmmmm what a pain the azz
every summer going to the UP with the in-laws think the then hubby made it once every 6 or 7 years which meant it was me sorting thru all the equipment setting tent up to spray it and let it dry making the list of supplies calling the sister in laws to figure out the menu for the week to feed 20 people packing everything in the truck mapping out where to go driving for hours this was before the kids were old enough to drive getting there only to set up the tent as the only woman without a man there to help I shouldn't say that my sons helped actually nothing like spending a week with my then husband's family feeling like the odd duck out since my spouse was the only one missing sleeping on the ground on stupid cheap blow up mattresses which deflated in the night having to pack and extension cord for my coffee pot oh and the public bathrooms and showers? ugh |

You leave the cell phone,computer,and all of the other modern contrivances behind. After a few days you might realize how addicted we are to our phones and computers. If you go for about a week without any mirrors,when you look at yourself again,You might look a little different.....There a lot of other good reasons...

I hiked and camped in Alaska for about two weeks,and everybody accepts you wherever you go.It is one of the most camping friendly states I've ever been. I was walking up from the river with a salmon,and met a ranger who asked what I was going to do with it.I said Eat it,and she said,bring it up to our camp,and we can cook it.I spent the evening with the park rangers,and had a great time,along with some fantastic salmon salad....
