i am a non-smoker so take this as you will

i feel that the anti-smoking lobby is a test of the govt to

see how far the people will let them push

before they go over the edge

and as they do these things one at a time

how many liberties will the people let be taken from them

b4 they will rise up and do something about it

if the smoking issue was truly a health issue

then they would pass a law requiring

an air purification system large enough to

clean the air of the smoke

and meet a clean air standard

this would protect the non-smoker from second hand smoke

but you ready for this enlightening tidbit

it would not lead to you quiting smoking

and the health insurance industry

would still have tobacco related

claims to pay out on

kinda like the seat belt law

how much has the seat belt law

saved the insurance industry

by the corporation for the corporation

turns and walks out cause

there is to much smoke in here

The proprietor of an establishment should be free to make choices that affect their own establishment.

On average pubs have seen a 30% drop in revenue since the ban. With the rising taxes on alcohol, and breweries having to put up prices we are seeing the end of independently owned public houses. If things carry on the way they are going, there will be nothing but chain / theme pubs left to drink in... Oh joy!

Its an old saying that 'The government that governs the best, governs the least' - and its true.

Banning anything from fox hunting to smoking removes a right. Removing rights is a bad thing. Adults should be able to make their own decisions, and be responsible for the decisions of their minors. Other than that, common law and guidelines should be enough to help society move along.

I'm a 20 ciggies a day girl and it was my choice to smoke initially and as I can't be bothered to give up right now why should I be polluting somebody elses lungs. I was stupid enough to start in the first place and now I'm stupid enough to stand in the cold or the rain for a nicotene fix, at least now I can kill myself guilt free without being whined at

well that is nice of you to feel that way

but they do make air purification systems

that could clean the smoke out of the area

and that should be an option for a business

if the air meets a set clean air standard

it should not matter if some one is smoking

after all how many carcinogens are the

manufacturing facilities spuuing in the air

or the motor vehicles there are lots of

reasons i remember when i was a kid seeing

a lot of really old people that smoked

but they were always smoking the non filter

like pall mall lucky strike and chesterfields

so what does that tell ya

If you'd be so nice to let a Yank interject my 2 pence. I live near Chicago, and when the pubs and restaurants open up on the 1st of the year, the same law will go into effect here. I live across the street from a decent sized pub, and the publican is worried about an extreme loss of business from this law. The winters here are bad enough on his business, and now this on top of that? The county next to me increased the tax on cigs by almost $3 the last time, so in the city of Chicago, it costs about $7.75 for one pack. That's about 4 pounds sterling. (do you still call it that?) In the county I live in, yesterday, I bought 3 packs for $10... All it has done for the other county is forced people to shop elsewhere, like my county. I agree that it'll be better for non-smokers in the pubs, but it will kill businesses.

This is supposed to be a U.K. Topic. Since the U.S.A. is responsible for much of the global warming and other human rights violations government by the people for the people apparently doesn't work because of this internationally corporate selfish world. The rich get richer and we all die. People under stress and/or with mental disabilities need to smoke a legal substance sold under license and taxed for many years for stress relief socially. Social inclusion not social inclusion. Tobacco is from the other side of the pond. There is no point in air purificication systems unless they are to rid us of the terrible smell of pubs. that was hidden by the smell of smoke. Have smoking pubs and clubs and non-smoking pubs. and clubs. Hotel bedrooms etc. should not be smoke free since they are homes from homes.

Gonna make a few enemies now but im all for the ban.

Went clubbing the other week and came home smelling fresh which was a decent change coming home smelling like an ashtray.

Never have smoked and never will, shall I get my coat?
