i rent a room to this guy. he has a dog. i also have a dog. he is never here but the dog is and i find myself having to take it out, feed it, watch it, etc... it barks constantly and when me and my dog go to bed, of course i have to take this dog or it will sit and cry all night. its not the dogs fault. this guy since last thursday has been home twice to eat and do a load of laundry and gone again. i meant to talk to him today when he "popped" in, but he ran out the door without saying anything. i get aggrivated that it is expected of me to babysit the dog. its like having kids in my opinion....you got em, take care of them...any suggestions on how to handle this?

Leave him a note.

Start charging "babysitting fees".

the next time he comes in tell him firmly you need to talk if he acts like he's in a hurry , tell him he stops now and talks or he is out

i would tell him politely that you are not a baby sitter. Basically be honest and upfront with him.

I am not sure that i have a suggestion... but I have animals of my own and i know the attention that they require.... his poor dog should be taken away from him.. he obviously does not love it like he should!

I would first discuss it nicely with him and explain it to him just like you did on here.

If that does not work you have three choices:

1. carry on as you are now
2. Raise his rent to include doggy care
3. Give an ultimatum for him to shape up or ship out

leave a note saying take care of the dog or you'll take it to the pound as abandoned..........mayby the threat will work.....since you have been doing it he obviously thinks you'll continue or you could tell him your gonna start charging extra for dog sitting

The sad thing is that if you weren't there that poor dog would be alone with no one to care for him... I would talk to him and if he won't fix the situation or pay you/cut your rent (if that's what you'd go for), then I would look for another room to rent....

Good luck!

I have a dog and i live on my own and it sometimes keeps me from going out at night or cutting errands and such sort just to get home and take care of my pup. It is a full time job if you take care of your dog right so i can see where you're coming from and i hope you can solve your issues soon! :)

noway noway noway

well this is not the quote i wanted. i wanted the one that said "it is not the dog's fault", and i have to take it to bed with me and my dog or it will sit and howl"?????the dog is missing it's master, and yes, they howl. it comes with the territory.....maybe you should just adopt the dog and be done with it. or get it a cat to keep it company.bigsmile

You know how us guys can be. Sometimes you have to spell things out for us. This might be needed in this case too.

I like the shape up or ship out route. you are there to make money renting a room, not to babysit and be put out of your way by taking care of someone elses duties.....give him the boot

he's one of those with an excuse for everything...blah blah...its time to cut the cord im thinkin...getting rent alone is like pulling teeth every month...unfortunately, its my own fault, but ive a vast knowledge of renter's rights being in property management for years so therefore, he has more rights than i do, getting him out is going to be difficult. its been one issue after another this is pretty much the icing on the cake. sorry this was my venting spot....

everyones got to vent somewhere. Better here than with the tenent. That would not be very professional. I would call animal control and see what legally you can and can't do from that point of view as well.

The ship out idea might be coming from a non dog lover/owner i'm not sure but if i had been takin care of a dog long enough you start to love them like they're your own and i couldn't see myself making the owner and dog leave but give him an ultimatum like you take care of your dog and be home more or the dog becomes mine.
