KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 24-year-old mother is in custody Saturday after her two young children were found barefoot, dirty and living in a wooden shipping crate in an underground cave on the eastern edge of Kansas City, Missouri.

Brittany Mugrauer was charged Friday night with two counts of felony child endangerment.

Jackson County detectives discovered the 4- and 6-year-old children Thursday in the 8-by-10-foot (2.4-by-3-meter) crate furnished with vehicle bench seats, two small blankets, trash and thin wires. According to the probable cause statement, the crate was missing one side and surrounded by car parts and vehicles in various states of disrepair.

The investigators, who went to the cave to serve a search warrant related to a possible stolen car operation, noted that the children did not appear frightened by them or the fact that they were alone.

The 4-year-old child was using hands to eat a dirty, dry cup of ramen noodles, a detective wrote. When asked why they weren't wearing any shoes, the children responded that they didn't have any. The older child told officers he should be in first grade but did not go to school.

The children were taken to Children's Mercy Hospital where they were evaluated, bathed and given clean clothes.

Mugrauer told investigators that her children had been living in the cave for several days and acknowledged leaving them there alone, the probable cause statement says. She was taken into custody Friday afternoon and has not yet appeared in court.

A spokesman for the Jackson County prosecutor's office said Saturday that he didn't think Mugrauer has an attorney.

The extensive network of caves is the product of massive limestone mining in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Years after the mining operations ceased, companies started finding ways to use the millions of square feet of abandoned underground space. The caves house hundreds of businesses, many of which specialize in storage or warehousing because they are protected from extreme weather and have year-round temperatures of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).

Many of the caves feature paved roads, utilities and developed business space, while others, such as the one where the children were found, consist of dirt floors and uncontrolled entrances.

anything natural is better for you than having some quack dump a bunch of chemicals into your body... doctors have a purpose, but shots and pills aren't the cure all...

Er, everything natural is made out of chemicals. Have you ever eaten food?

Just curious,

S.

Fruits and vegetable would probably have left over pesticides on them . Meats likely some hormones especially cows ground beef has food dye the list goes on :)

With teenagers I would worry about them being armed with something. The police are pretty good about coming. My area is low tolerance so someone usually calls.

In that scenario I would have called the police from my home that way no one would have known who made the call. I think that is another worry people have when it comes to doing something.

It seems that some doctors, pediatricians are trying to incorporate both. Also most pills are initially made from plants http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa061403a.htm

Good on you Romeo, someone has to step up and whether the child being bullied is yours or not, children will respect you for it. Turning a blind eye solves nothing.
At times the adult parents bully you for intervening.... spock

I have a had a parent pick on me all summer for stopping their child from pushing another on the ground he did the same thing another time and my oldest sons friend stopped it that time.

Another child damaged my youngest sons umbrella while shoving it into the door trying to get into our home. His step parent made him apologize and work off the cost of the umbrella. So each parent and or step parent has different views on a how to deal or not deal with the problem.

I supposes I could run the idea past the pediatrician and see what his thoughts are regarding foods being possible migraine trigger's.

Go for it. Unless your pediatrician is a naturopath, a homeopath, a sociopath, or Dr. Mehmet Oz (can be difficult to tell the difference, sometimes). If that is the case, get another pediatrician.

Keep in mind multiple possibilities, including the possibility that a 5yr old who doesn't like to eat his peas has discovered that pretending to have a headache gets him out of having to eat his peas. Or anything else unpleasant.

S.

Actually he loves broccoli

He has actual migraines he screams in pain says his head hurts barfs and then goes to sleep. The pediatrician saw him ones while having a migraine he said that is what it is. My friend also watched him while I was at work she called me panicking wondering what she should do.

His pediatrician wrote a doctors note for the school so he can have Motrin in case he has a headache there but they need to call me first.

I hope that enough volunteers help out. I am glad they are looking for homes for animals but I hope people who have lost their homes get assistance as well.

Good work to the fire fighters and emergency personal.

NYC millionaire leaves $100,000 trust fund for care of her 32 cockatiels, each named in will

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- A New York City millionaire who died this summer has bequeathed a $100,000 trust fund to care for her 32 pet cockatiels.

The New York Post reported Saturday that Leslie Ann Mandel's will asks that the small parrots continue living in an aviary at her $4 million East Hampton home.

The will names each bird, from Margie and Nicki to Zara and Zack 12.

With Mandel's stepson as trustee, the fund also will care for a cat named Kiki and a rescue dog named Frosty.

Mandel ran a fundraising firm and amassed a $5.3 million fortune. She died in June at age 69.

Other wills also have provided for pets. Hotel magnate Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog, Trouble. A judge trimmed the bequest to $2 million.

7 People Injured by Pizza
6/12

No food is more universally worshipped than pizza, which makes any slice-related accident or mishap all the more tragic. Unfortunately, its rock-like frozen crusts, acidic, eye-searing sauce, and molten cheese mean even a simple pie can be weaponized if it falls into the wrong hands. Check out seven people who were injured as a direct result of eating, pursuing, or being bludgeoned by this object of doughy desire.

1. THE PIZZA-HURLING PUPPET

A children’s puppet show is the last place you’d expect to be harmed by a pizza. But for magician Paul Daniels, what promised to be an innocuous appearance on the popular U.K. kiddie series TheSooty Show turned into a traumatic event. Daniels was taping a segment with the felt-covered star and insisted that a pizza be thrown at him harder for greater comedic effect. The puppet complied, and the second take resulted in a hand-tossed pie that dazed the 73-year-old Daniels, stung his eye with sauce, and prompted a trip to the hospital. Sooty’s operator, Richard Cadell, issued an apology on the puppet’s behalf. “Sooty’s very sorry for what happened,” he said. “He didn’t know his own strength.”

2. THE DANGERS OF CHICKEN-TOPPED PIES

Carnivores are always taking a small risk whenever they bite into their animal of choice: bone fragments can linger even after a proper dressing and cleaning. A restaurant patron was reminded of the danger when she bit into a chicken-topped barbeque pizza at the Round Table in San Francisco in February 2010. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Calla Felicity was splitting a pie with her mother when she inadvertently swallowed a one-inch long chicken bone. The edged contaminant pierced her esophagus, causing a rupture that became infected. She subsequently endured 11 surgeries. A jury awarded Felicity $2.5 million in damages, with negligence split 60/40 between the chicken farm (Foster) and the Pizza Bytes franchise, which owns the Round Table.

3. THE END OF THE DOMINO’S 30 MINUTE GUARANTEE

Eager to cement their status at the country’s premiere pizza franchise, Domino’s Pizza began promising customers in 1983 that their delivered pie would arrive in 30 minutes or less. The resulting pressure on drivers not to give away the doughy inventory for free or at a discount resulted in a number of accidents and lawsuits. But it wasn’t until a St. Louis woman named Jean Kinder was hit by a Domino’s driver who ran a red light that the company ended the promotion. Kinder suffered neck and spinal injuries as a result; in 1993, a jury penalized the company to the tune of $79 million.

In 2007, the franchise brought back the marketing gimmick with a “You Got 30 Minutes” ad campaign that didn’t make any explicit promise of expedited delivery. Changing their tune in 2013, they touted new pan pizzas that take slightly longer to cook by announcing they were no longer “all about speed.”

4. TAKEOUT PIZZA PUTS A FOOTBALL PRO IN THE HOSPITAL

Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson had some rotten luck in 2012 and 2013. First, he broke his leg during a game. A year later, he was back in the operating room with the same surgeon—this time because of pizza. Burleson was driving home with two piping hot pies on the passenger seat of his GMC Yukon when the box on top began sliding off. Burleson leaned over to prevent it from falling, lost control of the wheel, and crashed off the interstate. His broken arm took two months to heal. While infirm, he was gifted with free pizzas for a year from frozen pie company DiGiorno, who wrote that they understand “the challenges that come with pizza carry out.”

5. A TASTE OF THE MOB

For decades, it’s been alleged the Mob has had a hand in using pizza joints as fronts for shadier dealings, or even strong-arming honest owners into using their inferior mozzarella. In 2011, pizzeria owner Eugene Lombardo came up against Columbo family associate Francis Guerra, who was charged with smacking the restaurateur over his pie. Guerra's issue: he claimed Lombardo's 'za tasted too similar to the slices sold by his in-laws at L&B in Brooklyn. According to the New York Daily News, Guerra demanded Lombardo stop hawking his knock-off recipe, which he advertised as being close to L&B’s flavor. The information came out as during an investigation into murder charges, which Guerra beat—per the News, however, he was eventually sent to prison on a drug-related offense.

6. A (HOT) PIE IN THE FACE

While standing in line at a Truro, Novia Scotia, pizza parlor in April 2015, 22-year-old Paige Beaudry chastised a man for cutting in line. According to the Toronto Sun, the patron’s female associate allegedly stuffed a steaming slice in her face. The attack burned Beaudry’s cheeks, eyes, and nose; the woman was charged with assault with a weapon and, as of July, was still awaiting a court decision.

7. THE FROZEN PIZZA AS BLUNT OBJECT

Thoroughly cooked, pizza can be a delicious, largely harmless saucer of cheer. Frozen, it can be used as a bludgeon. According to the Journal Times of Racine, Wisconsin, a man was robbed by two passersby while walking home from a convenience store. After rejecting their request for money and turning away, he was struck in the head with a rock-solid pie; on the ground, the men punched him and stole his wallet. The perpetrators were never located.
