It is fine to advise that to someone who's going out to the bar with the intention of finding and meeting someone who's romantically interesting, however I'm not sure that most people with op's stated problem would be able to manipulate all the aspects in 'the game' as stated and at the same time 'be himself' with no 'intentions'. My thoughts are that it's too much to expect, I've read a couple of articles stating the same things and I'm sure they do work, I mean who wouldn't be attracted to someone with enough magnetism to become the leader of a group of people he's just met?
