So, the peoples' paychecks were being paid out of a line of credit by BOA? If that's the case, and the LOC was closed for past dues, that makes sense. They are a bank, not welfare. The onus for collected funds to distribute payroll is on the company. It's not nice, and the banks are getting theirs, but banks are owned by investors and I'll just bet BOA is under some kind of supervision and was told how to operate in certain matters, including shutting LOCs. I can just tell the whole situation has not been stated in this article. I do feel wretched for the workers. All of this stuff has really had severe repercussions and there will be more in the ripple effect. |

Angry laid-off workers occupy factory in Chicago By RUPA SHENOY – 14 hours ago CHICAGO (AP) — Workers who got three days' notice that their factory was shutting its doors have occupied the building and say they won't go home without assurances they'll get severance and vacation pay. About 250 union workers occupied the Republic Windows and Doors plant in shifts Saturday while union leaders outside criticized a Wall Street bailout they say is leaving laborers behind. Leah Fried, an organizer with the United Electrical Workers, said the Chicago-based vinyl window manufacturer failed to give 60 days' notice required by law before shutting down. During the two-day peaceful takeover, workers have been shoveling snow and cleaning the building, Fried said. "We're doing something we haven't done since the 1930s, so we're trying to make it work," she said, referring to a tactic most famously used in 1936-37 by General Motors factory workers in Flint, Mich., to help unionize the U.S. auto industry. Fried said the company can't pay its 300 employees because its creditor, Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America, won't let them. Crain's Chicago Business reported that Republic Windows' monthly sales had fallen to $2.9 million from $4 million during the past month. In a memo to the union, obtained by the business journal, Republic CEO Rich Gillman said the company had "no choice but to shut our doors." Bank of America received $25 billion from the government's financial bailout package. The company said in a statement Saturday that it isn't responsible for Republic's financial obligations to its employees. "Across cultures, religions, union and nonunion, we all say this bailout was a shame," said Richard Berg, president of Teamsters Local 743. "If this bailout should go to anything, it should go to the workers of this country." Outside the plant, protesters wore stickers and carried signs that said, "You got bailed out, we got sold out." Larry Spivack, regional director for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Council 31, said the peaceful action will add to Chicago's rich history in the labor movement, which includes the 1886 Haymarket affair, when Chicago laborers and anarchists gathering in a square on the city's west side drew national attention after an unidentified person threw a bomb at police. "The history of workers is built on issues like this here today," Spivack said. Representatives of Republic Windows did not immediately respond Saturday to calls and e-mails seeking comment. Police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said authorities were aware of the situation and officers were patrolling the area. Workers were angered when company officials didn't show up for a meeting Friday that had been arranged by U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a Chicago Democrat, Fried said. Union officials said another meeting with the company is scheduled for Monday afternoon. "We're going to stay here until we win justice," said Blanca Funes, 55, of Chicago, after occupying the building for several hours. Speaking in Spanish, Funes said she fears losing her home without the wages she feels she's owed. A 13-year employee of Republic, she estimated her family can make do for three months without her paycheck. Most of the factory's workers are Hispanic. |

jb, does this mean you agree with the assertion that most organized religions, by definition, are actually cults?
Yes. They all exert some kind of control upon their members. Some are more extreme than others and they tend to be labeled "cult" more often than larger and older accepted belief systems. But a cult generally has a leader. (The Pope is the leader of the Catholic cult and is even considered the leader of all Christianity, although some do not agree.) Leaders like Jim Jones are definitely cult leaders using Christianity as bait to get people into his flock. This is done by a lot of preachers. They use Christianity as bait to build a congregation around them self. Most preachers I have met are not so much men of God but men who love to be thought of as such. Eventually the cult just becomes a business. ![]() |

it's just another cult. The "teachings of Christ" are related to eastern religions and the Bible is mostly plagiarized. But plagiarism probably was not illegal back in those times so everybody did it. The New Testament was written by Roman aristocrats and the Piso family in an effort to change Judaism to a new and more manageable religion. The Old testament was basically Judaic law and attitudes and differs from the New Testament. God is said to be unchanging. If he were unchanging, he would not have changed his attitude or law from the flavor of the old testament law to the new testament. Religions have to change to fit society. You can't live by what people wrote 2000 years ago. (Stoning adulterous women and disobedient children is just not done anymore.) Feeding people to the lions isn't done either. Religions and laws must always change according to the advancement of consciousness of human kind. It is only natural that new religions will always arise from society. They will be labeled "cults." But people are individuals and they eventually will each individualize their beliefs until there will be no religions. Everyone will just be who they are and they will not need to follow the beliefs of others. Even in churches, you will find each individual has their own unique belief system apart from all others and apart from the church. Everyone is unique. There is no ultimate truth when it comes to religious doctrine. |

funches, hmm, I had this long winded thing all about creation vs. other ideas all ready for ya to examine. now it's gone. Guess I need a faster computer. I mean this one is just so old and boring that I am just getting bored with the same old thing over and over again. So since I need a new one to have more fun interacting with the people here in my little world of internet bliss on mingle2, I guess I will get one, or just build another one. I'll let ya know when I get a new one, maybe I will be able to keep my thoughts about me long enough to speak them into being on the www! later man, have a good day

Thanks for sharing. It is true... anger, resentment & being offended by people is a waste of time. It has no place in the solutions. Funny thing about getting slammed around by people is that it causes you to cry out for God justice...not revenge, but to make what's wrong in your life right. It's an awesome thing to see God divinely intervene when you allow yourself to experience the pain you feel. There is nothing like a humble heart to set you free from the fears, hurts etc, whatever they are. I remember saying to God...You made me this way. LOL Well God showed my He had nothing to do with it. It was the corruption of the world that did that. In quietness & confidence is your strength." That's how God makes us. ![]() ![]() |
