Gen Petraeus said on Night-line that when the Iraqi Army went to Basra 10's of thousands of Iraqi soldiers refused to fight and Deserted!!

IMO, this is the equivalent of what we would call American Soldiers refusing to fire on American citizens!
Iraqi Soldiers refusing to fire on Iraqi citizens!

I know we have some people on site who have recently been to Iraq. I wonder what you think of this analysis!
Are we seeing Iraqi soldiers unwilling to fire on their own citizens, or undisciplined cowardice?

This is a good time for a first-hand view of the conditions in Iraq! I'm anxious to hear,
What is the reason for these numbers of soldiers refusing to fight?

Quite simply they hate us. The citizens are not backward as we appear them to be. They see us preach for democracy but yet see us take oil and do buisness with dictators such as King Faad and his regime of Saudi Arabia. They know we only care for the oil and not the people. Sad but true....

I wouldn't use the word coward,,,, They really have had their share of war and it isn't that they wouldn't fight it just they have seen to much death,,,, Personally I wouldn't want to kill my own people....

Hey, Fanta!

Everything is doubleplus-good in Iraq.

The surge is working.

The Ministry of Information told me so.

Time to take some more soma.

John Stewart summed it up on Crooks and Liars:

Due to dubious foreign policy and C.I.A history of poking nose in internal affairs of other countries, anti Americanism is growing faster in Islamic world. The policies adopted by President Bush, such as the administration's aggressive efforts to overthrow Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and its withdrawal from the Kyoto Accords, a world environmental treaty, are driving the drop in U.S. popularity

Hey Hiker,
Id like to hear a first-hand assessment.
Wouldnt you?
I think those are good questions.
Questions you never really hear addressed.drinker

I wonder if we are aiding one side in a civil war?

That dude sadr has 60,000 heavily armed unpaid men, Iraqi Citizens, willing to fight. Thats a significant number!

I wonder too, Fanta.

With so much disinformation coming from the Ministry of Disinformation (The Bush Administration), it's hard to tell what's really going on.

Yeahhhhhhhh,,,, but
you'd have to be blind not to notice these things!

I mean, Sadr calls a cease-fire, simultaneous with the US Troop surge!
The violence stops, as Bush proclaims the push on Al Qaeda worked.
Now, here we are again,
Only the new Iraqi Army wont fight, tens-of-thousands deserted, and that was with American air support!

Well, Fantaflowerforyou , I am not over there so I cannot answer in that capacity but from the history of the region, we are a third or fourth wheel to their inner disputes.

As for them not wanting to fight their own on our behalf, it makes sense.

As for the comment to the fact they hate us, why would they like us? What have we done to help them? Everyone spouts off about Saddam but did THEY ASK US TO REMOVE SADDAM?? That is the real question.

Fanta, I want to know where you got those facts that tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers fled. I want to see it in video, on audio, or read it.

According to a NY Times Opinion piece entitled "More Time for More of the Same?" published April 8th, 2008.

In the fight in Basra, al Malika sent troops to battle al-Sadr's and "More than 1,000 Iraqi soldiers and police refused to fight or deserted their posts." - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/opinion/08tue1.html

More than 1000, that is NOT tens of thousands like you claim was stated. All I've seen says more than a 1000, likely not meaning more than 2, 3, 4, 5 and certainly not meaning 10, 15, 20, or 30 thousand on up.

I've been looking on anything, even Daily Kos stated more than 1000, they don't state thousands or tens of thousands.

Yeah....I just watched the Nightline segment with Petreaus and Crocker and not once was anything mention about any Iraqi troops deserting. Maybe it was a different segment that ABC News didn't want to put up on their site, but I have no idea why not. Maybe you got your source wrong or maybe some nutsite told you this was true.

Post the segment, prove this. This would be HUGE news if it was true, but it is coming up nowhere, not even on Daily Kos or Huffington Post where you know it would be front and center.

Show us, I just want to see the proof.
