This article tells about a eight year old girl who was sold as a bride to an older man. After 2 1/2 months of being raped, she filed for divorce in court and the judge granted her wish. This quote from her just about broke my heart "Always, when I wanted to play in the garden, he hit me and said I should go with him into the bedroom:". In a country where women cannot get a divorce and child marriage is legal this girl getting her divorce is without a doubt, a miracle. |

Actually, it is against the law there for girl who have not reached puberty to marry. So the Judge disolved the marriage in a way that the man can't go after her family financially. But it bothers me that the judge didn't do anything against the family that married her off illegally in the first place. The conditions that cause that are poverty. They do it for the money. So you can't fine a family that has no money already. Still, that's what makes me so mad. They don't punish the parents for selling her off like that.

According to what I read, there is no law that prevents child marriage in Yemen. The Shariah allows marriage to a child who is still breast feeding and they live under Shariah. Could you link something that supports what you posted? I guess somebody is bound to get a story like this wrong and I wouldn't want it to be me. Yemen? Thats outside my jurisdiction......... ![]() ![]() |
