No need to be sorry. I didn't write it, act in it, or produce it. laugh

In fact, I haven't even seen it yet. I've simply seen a preview for it and it looks interesting. I like fantasy movies.

I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings. I also enjoy Stardust.

I don't know whether I'll like The Golden Compass or not, but I did enjoy the previews. It seemed to have a lot of fantasy elements similar to Stardust.

I did see that it's quite controversial and I heard that Christians denounce it as being anti-God. But other people are saying that it's not anti-God at all. So I have no clue.

I just found out that I can get it from my local library for free. So at least I can watch it without the risk of losing anything but my time. bigsmile

Did you actually waste your time to watch it? Or did you just not like the previews?

saw it online, it was ok but I'm glad I didn't spend money on it. I think it would have made more sense if I read the books

Everything I've read thus far says that the books are far better (as usual). So maybe I should just skip the movie and get the book.

Just for the record, I got the movie and watched it. I thought it was great! It's definitely my kind of movie.

It's a wonderfully and clever fantasy I thought. I especially enjoyed the daemons. And the idea that children's deamons can morph into different animals whilst adult deamons can't. I thought the whole concept of the deamons was quite interesting. They represented the souls of the individuals. Unlike our world where our soul is integral into our body.

There were many very subtle plays on the relationships between the individuals and their deamons.

There was also many other interesting concept in the film. I enjoyed the idea of the Alethiometer (the Golden Compass). It's like a compass but instead of pointing to geographic directions it points to truth.

I enjoyed the talking Pantalaimons (large Armoured Ice Bears). I thought they were well done, and I enjoy talking animals in fantasy films (maybe I'm in my second childhood). laugh

I thought the whole movie was pretty cool and it's definitely going on my "Favorite Movies List". And trust me, not too many movies make it to that list.

(I think I'd actually like to read the book now)

It was by far the worst thing I've attempted to watch I saw it in the theatre on the night of the sneak preview and I fell asleep 10 min. into the movie and was awoken when it was over by my friend.... Hell I liked the book series though...

It was okay. It wasn't on the same level as other movies of the genre (to which it has been compared) and I was really annoyed by Lyra's behavior. A young child should do as he/she is told, to suggest that behaving otherwise is a good thing makes this questionable as a kids movie. Also, the "Darth Vader" surprise was trite. Honestly, I would have enjoyed watching Stardust again more than Golden Compass the first time.

I think it's interesting how different people have such different tastes. I thought it was quite good. I also didn't see Lyra as being all that rebellious. I mean, I thought she was rebellious in good ways.

Like in the beginning, her father (whom she thought was her uncle) told her to never mind what dust is. But that's truly an unjust thing for an adult to ask of a child. I guess the parallel with religion is that Children arent supposed to question God. But why not? My personally feeling is that adults have no right to hide such important things of life from children. Especially a child Lyra's age. Damn near becoming an adult herself.

The only other time she was actually rebellious was when Mrs. Coulter told her to remove her shoulder purse because Mrs. Coulter thought it was too childish. Well, again, that's the wrong reason to be telling children what to do. Adults who think they should be able to boss childern around for no good reason just to flaunt their authority need a good spanking themselves. laugh

I don't believe in authority just for the sake of authority. I think that with authority also comes responsiblity. An irresponsible authoritarian has no business being in a position of authority to begin with.

I enjoyed Stardust quite a bit myself, but I think The Golden Compass was more interesting if only because it was more complex. I got the book aready and now I'm going to read it and see how different it was from the movie. I only just started in on it and so far it's starts out almost identical.

Or maybe it was because talking about dust put her life in danger? Naaahhhhhh! I guess her dad just wanted to boss her around.
