i agree but most southerners weren't slave owners. they were too poor. the war was also about how the north wanted to run agriculture. (i am playing devil's advocate)

Slavery wasn't an issue until abolishinist talked Lincoln into the Emancipation Proclamation In 1962 or '63 and that only freed the southern slaves. The northern slaves weren't freed until 1865 by congress. The 13th Amendment.

Neither side was completely honorable. The factories up north during the industrial revolution needed workers and fighting to end slavery was convienient at the time. I would have sided with the north, but only for the altriustic reasons.

The people who owned slaves were the same people that stole the plantations from the Cherokee's in 1836.

I would have fought for the south due to the original cause for the war was states and individuals rights trumping the federal gov't. Slave were freed a couople years after the start of the civil war in the hope that they would rebel against the plantation owners and distract the southern armies from focusing on fighting the northern armies. Slavery actually had nothing to do with the first couple years of the war

the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves that the North had no way of freeing, it was a strong statement about the course of events the north would take but in reality it didn't free a single slave

My earlier relatives fought and died in the Civil War - on both sides. And if you think it was about slavery, you really need a history lesson.

And which side would I fight on...

American by birth, southern by the grace of God.
