ok, so this weekend it was brought to my attention that there is a scene in the wizard of oz where a munchkin supposedly hangs himself on set in the background during filming. we watched it over & over and argued that it is a bird, not a hanging munchkin. i'm still perplexed as i researched it and one of the munchkins actually did commit suicide. any insight to this urban myth? my grandmother knows margaret pellegrini who was a young munchkin in the movie and is calling her tomorrow to get the scoop.

That musta been one mighty TALL munchkin to hang himself from a stage set! ohwell

Yep, urban legend for sure. If'n you don't believe us...just skipper-doodle down the Yellow Brick Road and ask the "man behind the curtain"...he knows for sure! laugh

yea, i hear it was a crane or a peacock...however...i've also read that they superimposed the bird in later to cover up the hanging. i have no doubt that the image i saw was a bird, but, it's the size of the thing that doesn't jive with me. it's as big as the trees. youtube that sh!t.

you see the shadow of the munchkin climb up on something, nothing for a second, and then he swings through and back and the scene goes to something else. you have to look for it but its there.

i saw a bird bend down and peck at the ground, then raise up, turn, and spread its wings. i can see how the left wing of the bird looks like a swinging body because that's what your mind is telling you to look for, but it's definitely a bird. i don't see how the film could have got past all the editing without catching something like that.

I never knew about this. I have watched the movie so many times. Guess I would never see it unless I knew about it.

OK, cause I have seen the movie so many times and it rather bores me to watch it now, and would probably fall asleep. What scene is it in?

it's in the background after they meet the tin man and are continuing down the yellow brick road (singing). right after the scarecrow falls, watch the upper left screen.

my grandmother called margaret (one of the munchkins) today and asked her. she claims that nobody committed suicide at all and that something fell from the set and a stage hand climbed a ladder to put it back. i've not heard that before, and now it makes me even more skeptical on whether it really did happen and MGM kindly "asked" everyone to keep a lid on it. i think maybe they dubbed the bird in later to cover it up. it's definitely a bird but the size of it doesn't jive with the surroundings. it looks too large for how far in the distance it is. grumble
