noway That is just awful, I think I would go down the cop station and
talk to the Captain or who ever is in charge there. They owe you a heavy
duty (WE'RE SORRY)

Did you ever find out who they were after?

It's sad to think that it's come to this, but law enforcement officers
are trained that way. It helps them survive real situations where their
lives may be at risk!

Yes, I understand that they made a very big mistake and put you through
a very embarrassing situation - not to say frightening -but there must
be a means to complain to their bosses, so that this situation is not
repeated. Maybe send them to reading school, so they read the address
correctly the next time.

I'm not sure how they would have a problem selecting which house matched
the address, except if maybe there weren't any house numbers on the
house/mailbox?

Even so...like I said..bad mistake but...

if they THOUGHT they had the right house, they have to do whatever they
feel is necesssary to ensure their safety.

If the same situation had happened to me, sure, I'd be pissed, but I'd
also understand their protocol.

Same protocol to 'Serve and Protect' would have required an apology.

I agree; they should have apologized. And if it had been me, I'd have
gone down to the police station and demanded an apology, if need be.

Yes, they should ensure their safety at all times. And yes, they should
seek to enforce the law and one moronic mistake identifying a house is
naturally going to commit them to make further, somewhat-understandable
consequential mistakes (like initially harassing the wrong person).

But I say the MOMENT they are given a solid opportunity to recognize
their mistake is the moment they should spend 30 seconds
thinking/investigating and BACK OFF. I have personally experienced and
witnessed dozens of situations where particular police officers chose
not to the do this, and its WRONG. (And many dozens of situations where
the police were more professional).

Sheila, I'm wondering if you have ever had to deal with the same level
of police incompetence, prejudice, and abuse of power that I and others
have dealt with, because you seem to be bending way over backwards to
allow for their mis-conduct. BBS does say that the numbers on the house
they seek were visible to her from across the street.

And these cops weren't even 'corrupt' - they were just incompetent. It
really bothers me that so many people respond to news reports the way
you are responding to BBS post - making so many allowances for the
police- because I believe this kind of mentality -encourages- corruption
and abuse of power by the police.
