Hundreds of left-wing and human rights activists marched in the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday night to protest the massive Israel Air Force offensive in Gaza that left at least 230 dead and hundreds more wounded.

The protesters marched from Tel Aviv's Cinematheque toward the Defense Ministry offices. Police, some mounted on horseback, surrounded the protesters, arresting five of them.

Tens of thousands took to the streets across the world yesterday to protest against Israel's bombing of Gaza, writes David Leask.
More than 5,000 demonstrators, including singer Annie Lennox, former model Bianca Jagger and comedian Alexei Sayle, marched on Trafalgar Square in London.

Hundreds threw shoes at Downing Street, inspired by the Iraqi journalist who showed the samADVERTISEMENTe traditional Muslim sign of disrespect to US President George Bush last month.

More protested in cities across Britain, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, all demanding an immediate halt to Israeli air attacks on the Palestinian enclave and Hamas, the radical group that runs the territory.

Mass demonstrations took place in other major western capitals and across the Muslim nations of the Middle East.

Israel's military actions in Gaza are entirely justified under international law, and Israel should be commended for its act of self-defense against international terrorism. Article 51 of the United Nations Charter reserves to every nation the right to engage in self-defense against armed attacks. The only limitation international law places on a democracy is that its actions must satisfy the principle of proportionality. Israel's actions certainly satisfy that principles.

When Barack Obama visited the city of Sderot this summer, he saw the same things that I had seen during my visit on March 20 of this year. Over the last four years, Palestinian terrorists - in particular, Hamas and Islamic Jihad - have fired more than two thousand rockets at this civilian area, which is home to mostly poor and working-class people. The rockets are designed exclusively to maximize civilian deaths, and some have barely missed schoolyards, kindergartens, hospitals, and school buses. But others hit their targets, killing more than a dozen civilians since 2001, including in February 2008 a father of four who had been studying at the local university. These anticivilian rockets have also injured and traumatized countless children.....

The Israelis have done a lot of great propaganda work. They wonder why people develope prejidices against them. My favorite writer is Noam Chomsky so I do not feel any prejadice against them as a group or whole. But this mass slaughter of civilians sickens me. Of all the people of the world the Jews should know better

What's happening in Gaza is a military battle Israel vs. Hamas not a mass slaughter of civilians. Hamas bus and cafe bombings are mass slaughtering of civilians. Hamas can surrender and agree to give up their arms and control of the Gaza strip and the battle will be over. The blood of the Gazans is on the hands of Hamas. To end the battle quickly they might consider immediate surrender.

statement of fact. it was always within the power of
Hamas to honor the truce, extend the truce, end the
rocket attacks or surrender. hamas always chose the
path of violence. the israelis have no choice but to
act to protect their citizens. many all over the
world combating radical islamic militants understand

Israel withdrew all it's military..and.. the Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip in September of 2005... the Iran-backed terrorist group...Hamas...then took over The Gaza Strip...by force in mid-June 2007...the blockade by Israel...is in direct response to this action...not to mention...the more then 6000 rockets launched since Israel withdrew in 05'

Diplomacy to end the conflict appeared to falter. Late on Saturday night, the US blocked a UN security council statement calling for an immediate ceasefire.
