Blade Runner, one of my favorite movies, addresses this.

Right. Thats one of my all time favorites. The "Replicants". Its an ethical issue also. If they are designed to be like people in most all ways, then what rights do they have? huh

As Rutger Hauer is dying, he spares Harrison Ford because he, at that moment, appreciates life more than anything. I think it's asserting that if you can appreciate life and you truly want to live, then you are just as alive as anyone. I think this is where Harrison Ford really makes that leap.

The books is a very good read too. Written 40 or 50 years ago I think, but still very good. Its original title is "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep".

I don't think so. There is no substitute for a human being. Sometimes the unexpected, quirky things are the best things about someone.

Did you read that? I never did and just watched the film "Bladerunner" which I guess the film was adapted from.. I heard that "Dekker" Harrison Ford's character of the Bladerunner actually ends up being a Replicant and he didnt know similar to that female one. Was that true in the book?

I don't think so. The emotions and the soul that makes up what we are would be missing.

I read the book many years ago.... probably early 1980's. It's very good but not as 'modern' as Blade Runner. It does deal more in depth with the themes of what being 'alive' really means. There are also some religious overtones that aren't in the movie. Truly amazing is how well the story holds up, even today. The author managed to write a futuristic novel that didn't get obsoleted 40 years later.

I don't think Decker turned out to be a replicant in the book. His partner starts to doubt his own 'humanity' but Decker tests him and he turns out to be human.

You know, it's been long enough... I think it's worth another read.

Cherry 2000 is a favorite of mine where the guy had to choose between Cherry and the girl. the ending was so sad for me. I can still see Cherry out there looking for that Pepsi.
