Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.

sounds like somebody likes him
Ya know, Hitler was elected by a majority vote too.

lots of difference between a county sheriff and Hitler

since the only two people (here) who were incarcerated there moved out of the state it sounds like his methods work

I have to admit that on first inspection, other than the chain gang idea, I was all for it, because I was thinking about the repeat criminals and not all who happen to be there for lesser offenses, so his idea was one size fits all and that doesn't necessarily require creative thinking.

While one inmate might require one punishment another might require none at all. So I have rethought this a bit and while I think some of his ideas would work and probably have, that doesn't mean they actually did in real life, I am only reading a post.

It certainly helps if one has actually been there and knows.

Maybe we can think about things that would be cool like the rescue thing. I am too tired tonight, but would be fun to think of things that would actually do some good in a sucky situation like that.

By the way...my lawyer advised me to sue for damages but I chose not to. I just decided to move as far away from Maricopa County as possible. That was my first and only brush with the law. I have absolutely no criminal record and am an upstanding citizen. Joe Arpaio is an out-of-control, power-mad, self-serving, opportunist.

Sounds like a real Bushie!!

Some people buy pit bulls in hopes that their reputations intimidate. But, when the pit bulls get out of control and maul the wrong people, the hue and cry is "How could this have happened???"

I think Sheriff Joe is perfect example of the old Latin sentiment, "Who will protect us from our protectors?" (Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?) If you read up on his and his department's latest antics, you'd see that they themselves, at times, have as much contempt for the law as the people they detain. Several times, they overstepped their bounds and were warned by duly constituted authorites to back off, that they were in violation of statutes. Their reaction was to try to intimidate those officials by using Freedom of Information Act requests for everything from the cell phone records to personal emails of those public officials, most likely with the intent to get those same uppity public officials into their tent city to teach them a lesson.

And if you subscribe to the notion that a free press is one of the first bulwarks of freedom, you might look into how the Maricopa County Sheriff's department has also tried to intimidate reporters.

It sounds to me like these folks are becoming a law unto themselves, where everyone is guilty until proven innocent, where to someone with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Do you _really_ want a commander-in-chief who uses the power granted to him by the people to enhance his celebrity?

Be carefu for what you ask for!

Oh, you also might want to reconsider the alleged savings his methods have obtained-- in the debit column are at least $43 million in judgements against the department and Sheriff Joe personally for their missteps.

he sounds a bit 'big headed'
a bit arrogant and looking for publicity
but i think what he has done overall is a good thing.
i don't know about his 'debit' side of his budget, but what he did was good.
yes, there are the few who have been treated poorly but i think you get that anywhere you go.
overall, his ideas are quite ingenious if you ask me.
