TRENTON, N.J. — A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography after posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com — charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted.

The case comes as prosecutors nationwide pursue child-pornography cases resulting from kids sending nude photos to one another over cellphones and e-mail, a practice called "sexting." Legal experts, though, could not recall another case of a child-porn charge resulting from a teen's posting to a social networking site.

MySpace would not comment on the New Jersey investigation, but the company has a team that reviews its network for inappropriate images. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tipped off a state task force, which alerted the Passaic County Sheriff's Office.

The office investigated and discovered the Clifton resident had posted the "very explicit" photos of herself, sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer said Thursday.

"We consider this case a wake-up call to parents," Maer said.

The girl posted the photos because "she wanted her boyfriend to see them," he said.

Investigators are looking at individuals who "knowingly" committed a crime, he said, declining to comment further because the case is still being investigated.

The teen, whose name has not been released because of her age, was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography. She was released to her mother's custody.

If convicted of the distribution charge, she would be forced to register with the state as a sex offender under Megan's Law, said state Attorney General Anne Milgram. She also could face up to 17 years in jail, though such a stiff sentence is unlikely.

First and foremost, the parents should also be charged. This kid isn't 18, and in many places the parents are liable for the torts of their child. IF more parents would be held accountable, instead of using those lame excuses, there wouldn't be so many out of control kids.
She knew what she was doing was wrong, she shouldn't have even been surprised when she was charged. We have murderers and everything else that age, thanks to lousy parents, and they stand trial as adults, so should she. Throw away the book, set a precedent, and maybe these slutty brats will knock it off.

I am VERY proud to be the parent of a 15 year old virgin who would be disgusted by this kind of behavior. So, consider that the judgment of her peers, don't let her off the hook with "but all the other kids are doing it", because they aren't. Not as many sleaze buckets out there as some make it out to be, and the good kids are still taking the rap for this because of bogus stereotypes. I wish more of these nasty little baby whores would get pulled up on charges and held accountable, boys and girls alike.

Maybe this will set precedence over the 'private' and 'personal' emails, texts, im's, sent over the world wide web.

Shame for that 14 yr old, busted for trying to act/behave grown.

Sorry for the parents as they are about to feel the wrath of many, maybe they could have done more, maybe they did and this was done behind their backs. Only way to know is to ask them personally.

Kids only get away with doing something behind your back if you dare to turn it for too long.

I find it ridiculous that anybody is being charged with child pornography over this. I find it even more ridiculous that our court system would seek to place anyone doing this in the same category as pedophiles and serial rapists.

It is absolutely ridiculous to charge teens under existing child porn statutes. I have posted about this before as well.

Time to contact your legislators and prosecutors to ask that this legislation be re-examined. It seems obvious to most that it should be but I can understand the reluctance of some legislators to do so. I can see it coming up to bite them in the butt in a reelection campaign..."John Doe Loves Child Porn"

It was, is and will be ridiculous. However, from time to time "amorality" charges become fashionable again. These means that the government is ready to kill the dissidents, and is looking to falsely charge them with "amorality" first.

This is how it happened in other countries that had a police state. Once you charged with "amorality", say child porn, you lose all support, as everybody is so outrages, nobody believes you.

Secondly, it works for police state because once you've been planted with the "evidence", it doesn't matter to anyone that the evidence could have been planted. It is shocking enough to be immediately believed.

Wow....now this is certainly a gray area. Is a child...a child herself...really what one could call a child pornogrphist by posting pictures of herself? Hmmmmmm...this is some scarey sh!t. She is a teen....doing teen (idiotic) things that they are known to do. Damn...I am going to have to think about this awhile.

I do worry about the brazen ways of kids now days.Such actions and behaviors is too acceptable to young people these days. What is this telling us about sex and tv -movies that our children are seeing?

We have to face it; kids now are very sexual and have no conscience about wrong things. Most kids. There are exceptions to this I know. But for the most part it is so prevalent.
