Who served as president for only a day?
David Atchison. Atchison was a senator from Missouri (the Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad was taken from his name). Atchison was elected president pro tempore of the Senate on Friday, March 2, 1849, upon the nomination of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, also of Missouri. Two days later, March 4, at noon was when, according to the Constitution at the time, the presidential administration of James Polk officially ended. Vice President George Dallas had already resigned his office on March 2. There was, therefore, no president of vice president. March 4 fell on a Sunday. Zachary Taylor, for religious reasons, however, would not take his oath on the Sabbath. Thus, Atchison technically succeeded to the presidency. Atchison spent the day in bed signing no legislature acts or executive orders. Taylor took his presidential oath on Monday. At his death, Atchison's home state of Missouri erected a monument with this inscription: David Rice Atchison 1807 - 1886. President of the U.S. for one day, Lawyer, Statesman, and Jurist. |

Which president is depicted on the $100,000 bill?
Woodrow Wilson. It is perhaps apt that the president responsible for creating the Federal Reserve System in 1913 should have his picture on the highest denomination of money in circulation. |
