Chester Alan Arthur always claimed that he was born in North Fairfield, Vermont, although no birth certificate has ever been found to confirm it. His political foes and some historians believed he was born across the border in Canada. Of course, if he had been born in Canada, he would have been ineligible to be vice president or president. Vice President Arthur succeeded James A. Garfield died of an assassin's bullet in 1881. |

Who was the first President who didn't kiss the Bible as a part of his inaugeration? Dwight D Eisenhower Didn't know this - and found this George Washington, the 1st U.S. President who served in 1789 to 1797, added the phrase “So help me God” after taking the oath in 1789, and he kissed the Bible–two traditions that have been carried out by most presidents since. Franklin Pierce, 14th U.S. President, in 1853 was the first to affirm the oath of office, rather than swear it. Both are allowed. He used a Bible, but he didn’t kiss it. |
