The number of confirmed cases of swine flu around the world has climbed to 73, with 40 of them in the U.S., the World Health Organization reported Monday. WHO officials say they are "very concerned" about the disease's spread. A New York official said the city has 28 cases of swine flu, with 17 additional probable cases.

President Barack Obama said Monday the threat of spreading swine flu infections was a concern but "not a cause for alarm," while customs agents began checking people coming into the United States by land and air.

The United States government will issue a new travel advisory to Mexico later today, said Dr. Richard Besser, the acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during a Monday press conference. He said travel to Mexico should be avoided out of an “abundance of caution.”

Besser said that Americans should be prepared for the problem to become more severe, and that it could involve "possibly deaths."

Countries across the globe increased their vigilance amid increasing worries about a worldwide pandemic, Obama told a gathering of scientists that his administration's Department of Health and Human Services "has declared a public health emergency as a precautionary tool to ensure that we have the resources we need at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively."

The U.S. has released 11 million courses of antiviral drugs that are en route to affected states including Califorinia, Texas and other states around the country, Besser said. He also said that health officials don't think exisiting vaccines are effective against the swine flu and discussions are underway about whether to develop a new vaccine.

Authorities were not recommending that people in the U.S. put on masks in the workplace to protect against swine flu infection.

The quickening pace of developments in the United States in response to some nearly 2,000 swine flu infections in neighboring Mexico — with a suspected 149 deaths — was accompanied by a host of varying responses around the world. The European Union advised against nonessential travel to the U.S. and Mexico, while China, Taiwan and Russia considered quarantines and several Asian countries scrutinized visitors arriving at their airports.

and the death toll is rising... ohwell

**********

LONDON (AFP) — Two people admitted to a Scottish hospital after travelling to Mexico have been confirmed as the first cases of swine flu in Britain, Scottish Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Monday.

"I can confirm that tests have demonstrated conclusively that the two Scottish cases of swine flu are positive," she said, adding that the two confirmed patients were "recovering well."

Seven other people who came into contact with them, among 22 tested, have developed mild symptoms of the flu, she said.

Sturgeon added: "I would reiterate that the threat to the public remains low and that the precautionary actions we have taken over the last two days have been important in allowing us to respond appropriately and give us the best prospect of disrupting the spread of the virus."

An outbreak of the flu in Mexico has killed at least 149 people.

British health minister Alan Johnson said earlier that Britain was implementing "enhanced" health checks at entry points into the country to identify passengers arriving with symptoms of the illness.

edit - the death toll was 103 this morning ohwell
