Does anyone honestly have any insight into cat behavior an as to why she would do this? My 2 boys are goin to be crushed when they get home from school today. I'm honestly thinkin about findin a replacement kitten.

I have had cats for a number of years.
Anytime we have brought a new cat into the house, the other cats have been less than welcoming. But after a period of adjustment the relationships realign.
We brought home a kitten, and our old cat Flower made noises I have never heard from a cat before in my life, sounded like a panther growl, it scared me.
Now her and Donna are best buds, have been for a long time.
A third cat was added, Bodhi. After some defensive and aggressive behavior, they tolerate her but that's it.

I would wait a while, let them grieve for the lost one, see how fragile young life is before bringing a new kitty home.

The only thing I can come up with is that Oreo is young, not quite a year old an Peanut bein so small, she looked at him as bein 'prey'. Or perhaps she was tryin to 'mother' him an was just to rough not bein experienced. She's hadn't shown any real aggression towards him. It just confounds me as to why she did this. I've never had sumthing like this happen with a cat before. I've had cats an kittens since I was a kid. I've never seen this type of behavior. shades

I've been following this thread & just wanted to say how sorry I am about lil Peanut. It's tough after putting in so much time, care & effort... And I also understand you being upset with Oreo... But please don't punnish her for doing what comes naturally...would it have been any different if it had been a bird or baby squirrell? I know it's rough but remember...cat's are predatory animals...we cannot give them human traits...no matter how much we love or get disappointed with them...

I am not a cat person but sorry for your sad experience.

Sounds to me like a normal territorial response to an intruder. Animals intinctively know that there is only so many animals that can live in a certain space and remain healthy. They don't understand that you are going to compensate for the additional demands. The younger cat was just defending her survivial.

I would not get a substitute kitten for a while. Death of a pet teaches children a lot about bonding and greiveing experiences and you don't want to give them the idea that individual living creatures are so easily replaced. Since you have already buried the pet I would suggest geting a small plant or resin animal and let the children establish a memorial with you. They will take their cues from how you deal with this loss. I would try to keep it together and not over dramatize the situation or you may turn your children off from wanting pets.

Before you get too angry at your other cat I would remember it is entirely possible that the kitten just died and the older cat was just playing with the corspe.

Try not to be too hard on yourself about all this. Things happen when you least expect. Sounds like you are a great Mom and a loving person over all. Sending a hug to help you.

Oreo stayed outside for all of 10 minutes. I understand that whatever it was she was doin was not her 'fault' an can't punish her for it.
I'm goin to have a very upset 4 yr old to deal with this afternoon when he gets home from preschool. Elijah was quite attached to Peanut an so was I.

After givin it much thought I have decided it's best to wait before gettin another kitten. I'm just goin to explain to Elijah that Peanut was sick and died. I don't want him havin any resentment towards Oreo an he's too young to really understand anything different. After a few weeks I'll take him with me to pick out a much older kitten that he can help care for an claim as 'his'.shades

For those of u who've been followin an have seen his first pic, Peanut has grown. He's becomin quite a handful at a young age. LOL He's already gone on his first road trip. I had to go to Jackson, so he got to tag along due to his feedin schedule. Nuthin funner than sneakin a lil' kitten into Wal-Mart stuffed in your shirt. LOL He's got his lil' motor workin now. He lets me know how content he is after he's been fed by revin it up into overdrive.

is this the one that was bottle fed????

awwww...

scratch that i went back and read through the thread. dear god that sucks rocks. yeah i'm guessin oreo is another cat? if so they are very territorial. that really is a bummer.

oh man.

i'd have been furious. :(

good luck with that. regardless what you do, you'll have to explain somehow to your kids whats happened.

oooh rb. i'm sooo sorry. that sucks. :(

you CANNOT bring another kitten in the house if oreo is going to act like that. seriously. its not gonna be pretty.

you'll have to remove oreo completely if you want to get another cat.

I hope that I don't sound like a d!ck but...why should Oreo be removed for ACTING like a cat? This has got to be very painfull for Redd but...as far as I can tell...no one really knows what happened to Peanut...maybe Pacific is right...???

I have some very sad news to share with everyone. Peanut died this mornin. I went in to get him for his mornin feedin an found him dead in his box. I made the mistake of leavin my bedroom door open alil too long an Oreo got in. I don't for the life of me understand why she did this. I have since buried Peanut an put Oreo outside. I will not have a cat like that in my house. It breaks my heart about Peanut. I worked so hard to keep him alive an bottle fed him faithfully an took such care. Then one time I slip in the midst of gettin my boys off to school.

shocked

I'm so sorry. What a shock that must have been to you.flowerforyou
