I got screwed by the border guards at Canada too.

we had driven from Toronto to Michigan for me to do dialysis (Medicare wont pay for it out of the country) and they wouldnt let me back into Canada

turns out that the medical insurance I had purchased wasn't sufficient for me to be allowed back in (pre-existing condition and all that). and they did require me to show an ATM printout to prove I had sufficient funds to stay in Canada

we wound up having to drive from Michigan to Buffalo for me to get my dialysis and had to fly home two weeks early and basically ruined our trip

I think its crazy. Driving from Port Huron to Sarnia is nothing! It takes me longer to go from the city of Detroit to Metro Airport in Romulus!

OMG! Crap! The US is in the great depression.... close the borders to anyone that is poor! Quick they will all come over to Canada for the free health care! noway Whatever!

shocked rant

I'm really gonna piss you off, but I kind of agree with border guard. devil

how do you know who was paying for the visit

maybe the family sent them the finances to make the visit

after all her schedule is probably the most flexible

Maybe it wasn't the border guards place to make the comment that he did, but he did have a point on a few levels. If you are welfare, maybe you shouldn't be taking trips. The article doesn't say where she was heading in Canada and the border guards do have right to try to determine if you are trying to illegally establish residency.

I have crossed the border to "visit" before a few times. Never had a problem before 9/11.

Since 9/11, I was headed up to see a friend. I had a letter with directions to their new place (a signed invitation so to speak), $2000 in cash and my credit cards. This time I was detained on a "routine" check. I was escorted inside while my vehicle was searched, asked for my ID, and waited for 2 hours before I was called to the window.

35 years ago I was "busted for 2 pot seeds" in a baggie and charged with felony possession (it was 35 yrs ago remember). The charges were reduced to misdemeanors (you never got a single charge, they always added a few to "plea bargain" a guilty plea) but I received 5 yrs probation and fines.

According to the CBA, I was unsuitable for entry because of my criminal record, and tho I had plenty of cash available, was employed in the US, was a veteran, no felony charges on my record, and no charges other than a few speeding tickets in over 20 years, was forced to return to the US having been denied entry. I was also told that should I attempt to enter in the future, or was "caught" in Canada after a successful entry, that I could face up to 20 years of imprisonment!

Hey! I made somebody's list! Now you tell me, what is their reasoning?
