Before I pose my real question, I will start with an example to show
where I'm coming from.

You go into a shoe shop, a fellow shopper hands you a shoe and says: " I
was told they don't fit me, I think it will fit you"
You try it on but don't like it at all
Do you

a) complain about the shoe factory?

b) complain about the shoe?
or
c) about the one that handed you the shoe without thinking.

Now let's take it a bit further.
Somebody posts a thread as a joke.
Another person takes it personally and is informed, that it is not so.
Now he looks around and tells another one: " hey, that was meant for
you"

Who now is the one that should be complained about?

The one that posted a thread as a joke

or the one who told the other one it was about him?

drinker

I don't like the shoe, I say thanks but no thanks...I choose not to have
this shoe.

As to the real question, if someone is so affected by a general comment,
and is not named specifically, then one has to wonder, why be so
sensitive?

Is it a personal persecution, a paranoia, or ego based?

Does the entire world, and every person's thoughts really only revolve
about that person?

Sorry to say, NO.

If one is so easily manipulated by another, I would question the motives
of both, the one who implied it was directed in a malicious way, and
also the one who CHOSE to take it personally.

invisible,

I didn't think the thread was about me, I knew who it was meant to
attack. You could have just asked me, I'm a big boy and can answer for
my own actions. My email works, I haven't blocked anyone and wouldn't
unless they really harrassed me. So next time save yourself some
trouble, when I posted in that thread, I knew exactly who was being
attacked.

I think by the words used, it's usually pretty easy to tell whether or
not the post was aimed at a specific individual or indivuduals. I think,
even if it was done in a "backhanded way," that one could "claim" it was
meant as a generic "joke," that, if you were to consider previous
discussions, it would be readily apparent how the "joke" was intended
and to whom it was referring.

Without knowing all the specific details, it's hard to say, but,
generally speaking, I think the one who posted the "joke" should be the
one blamed for it.

And let me make something clear. I would have posted the same post into
any thread that attacked anyone, even someone I didn't like. You guys
cry all the time "The Bible makes it a case of us against them", but
that's how you live your life! I am consistant, I will defend anyone
who is attacked, even if it is my friend or my family doing the
attacking. I believe all humans have worth, even those whom I don't
like. I teared up the morning that I found out Saddam had been executed
and I fully supported him being deposed. I love humanity, not the
individual humans who stroke my ego.

Thank you Spider and wonderman,
I have seen all I wanted to see.
You don't want to answer questions.
You WANT to feel attacked because it gives you more chances
to get your EGOS stroked.

Is this an 'us' and 'them' thing?

Because I have no feeling of us , nor you, them.

Spider, I have sat back and read your posts, and learnt so much from
you, your explanations of things when I am not 'engaged' in discussion
makes sense...I can see where you are coming from.

I as a person, have different beliefs to you, but I understand yours
more clearly, and I thank you for that.

i am not here, posting to engage, just to say thankyou.

As to the OP, I answered a general question..and a hyperthetical one, as
to whether thinly veiled or blatant...I would have answered the same
way.

If this thread was in sex and dating, I would have answered the same
way, relationship advice, any topic...I would have answered the same
way... I asked myself this before I posted, in this thread, to be sure I
was not being biased.

Jess, I know that, and before wonderman and Spider answered it was
a general question. They took it upon themselves to make it personal and
a them and us thing. I have seen what I needed to see. If a thread isn't
about them, they make it about them.
A general question requires a general answer and not a " but, me,
my and myself " one.
I will retire from this forum as I'm not here to stroke egos.
I'm here to learn and I will continue to do so by just reading.

SpiderCMB replied:

Yeah, that's not directed at me at all. It's just that a similar
situation happened yesterday and you *thought* that I originally took
the thread as an attack on me. When I clarified that I knew it was an
attack on Wonderman, you *assumed* that I was just shifting the burden.
The truth is, the object of the thread yesterday was as obvious as the
object of this thread. To claim that the thread yesterday wasn't
directed at Wonderman or that this thread wasn't directed at me is a
lie.
