I think if they were a good friend the person could get pass the awkwardness. I had it happen to me. It was a little weird, but we are still friends.

No, but I had a dear friend tell me. I guess he wanted more for years and finally got around to telling me. Our friendship fell apart after that. No one was to blame, it just happened. I still miss him in my life

To then they were being your friend under false pretense. I' not a person friend just to tell them what they want to hear. But I will admit there might be some changes. because they want to me around you for something more. If that's not going to happen then. Why let them lead themselves on? Just another perspective.
