i remember my first middle school dance. shy boys and
beautifully dressed girls hoped at each other from across
the room. shuffling feet and wanting to talk, wanting to
laugh, wanting to see a glint in another's eyes. groups
of the same sex gradually coalesced - talking to each other
the way they always did when not in this unnatural and
artificially induced atmosphere.

some of the established couples danced of course. exhibiting
for all to see - they had found comfort and compatibility
and needed no one else.

eventually - a boy walked to a girl and asked politely
"Would you like to dance?"
