You go to the person's profile you want to IM with. If they have it on you just click it. But most here have it turned off. Good luck

Your best bet as newbie is to join in the forums, get to know people, have some fun and then try IMing....as stated, a lot of people here don't have IM turned on. There are many reasons for this, they don't want to IM strangers comes to mind first! Good luck.
