So LA Times ripped it to shreds but i never listen to other crits.

So i took my mom and best friend and we sat there in utter awe at the sheer beauty of this film.

holy crap.

i cried like a baby. it was like therapy film style. soo beautiful.

now if you'll excuse me, i must go sleep in a giant cuddle puddle.

I think a lot of people miss the point of the movie, which was actually the same point of the book. The story deals with a child throwing a tantrum and running wild, being scared and being a brat, something all kids do. The movie conveyed the fear and wonder of being a child perfectly, in my opinion. I think the trailers for the movie are cut wrong, they make it look like a family friendly movie, when really I think it should be for kids, what, 9 and up? Not sure, just expressing my feelings towards this. Now that I look like a complete snob :p

Well yeah, I know it's not just that, guess I was too general in my description, heh. Just trying to say, it's good that it doesn't talk down to it's audience, I think that it's a pretty honest movie in the way it deals with how kids take things, doesn't really pander to them. Kids should be scared every once in a while, I mean geez look at kid's movies from the 80s.

The trailers were decieving to someone who has never "read" the book. Which is me. I don't think my room mates 7year old has read the book either. I am sure it had some type of theraputic affects on certain individuals or it may have caused painful memories in some.

Yeah, I can see how that happened, the trailers kind of make it look like it's gonna be a 90 minute long hug-fest. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but I can't deny that it was pretty intense. But hey, like I just said, look at some of the movies that were kid-oriented in the 80s. Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Return to Oz, Neverending Story, I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.

its the story of a young boy who is troublesome so he runs off to a world all of his own. but then he's put into the shoes of a ruler (a parent) and realizes that being the one who makes the decisions.. isn't an easy feat.

the book was a staple in my childhood and those who have not read it should read it first before seeing the film.

this movie wasn't made for just everyone. it was made by a huge fan of the story... (spike jonze) for fellow fans of the story. its a perspective. that is why the reviews are so incredibly mixed.

i walked in there with my mind reverting back to being a child.. to the wonderment of my own little world.. and remembering that when reality blends with a childs fantasy.. the lessons are much harder to face.

its amazing though.. we sat there in the theatre and realized we were surrounded by adults. and by the end of the film.. we were surrounded by a bunch of giant kids.. cryin. it was definitely amazing.

I am almost 51 yrs old, and it had just been published when I was a child, just learning to read, getting my own books from the library.
It was an absolute favorite. As a parent I read it to my kids, and bought a copy for us to always have at home.
For me it was a book about wild imaginations.

I also have my own copy of 'Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel'.

Another book that is still around that had just been published at the same time was 'The Secret Three' I talked to my kids about these books and they remember them fondly.

But the voice of 'Tony Soprano' IDK, it makes me laugh.

OK so we saw the movie today, and I must say it was thought provoking.
It seems to aim at the folks who grew up with the book originally, like me, and yet my teen daughters liked it a lot.
I think it is a very personal, culturally relevant movie, that will mean different things to different people.
Overall, it was good-worth the nice theatre matinee rates.
The scenes-especially in the beginning-when it was like someone running with a video camera, were a bit nauseating, but I get why those scenes were filmed that way.
The movie made sense, hit nerves, was sort of nostalgic, and was relevant in modern times.
I give it a thumbs up and so do my 17 and 15 year old daughters!
Now go out and see it for yourself!

LOL @ some of the voices ... yeah the whole tony soprano thing was a lil weird but by the end.. i doubt anyone else could have done better. he broke my heart with his tenderness.
