Has anyone ever flown and had severe pain in their ears, then lose their hearing as the plane descended? I was completely deaf for 8 hours. It was a very scary feeling. Doc said you are not supposed to fly with a head cold. I won't anymore!

One of the reasons I don't like to fly.

The air pressure changes can have a real effect on some folks.

Yes, sorry that happened.flowerforyou
I usually have some candies, jerky to chew on while flying.
It seems to help.

the last time i was on a plane was when i was about 11yrs old when my parents were going through there divorce and they sent me and my sister to nevada to visit my grandparents for awhile
i didnt have any problems but i remember my sister was getting air sick.
as for loosing your hearing that would often happen when we would drive down the path to eastern oregon for the climate was differnt but nothing with loosing hearing in the airplane

I had no problem on the flight up to Colorado. The flight back was totally different, but I was sick and my ears could not take the pressure. I won't be flying sick again.

yes, unreasonable pain, and chewing helps, like polson said, as well as ginger for stomach ailments. they won't let pilots fly with a head cold for these very reasons. it could risk the plane itself.

All you have to do is, plug your nose and, GENTLY blow. It will release the pressure. It scared me to death when I had it happen. A guy next to me told me to do that.

People suffering from hidden inner ear infections can have that problem. Your Eustacia tube, the one that connects your inner ear to your throat becomes swollen and cannot allow the inner ear to vent. For some reason a lot of times inner ear infections can hide and manifest themselves in strange ways. A loss of ability to equalize the pressure in your inner ear is one of them. Chewing gum does help you to 'pop' your ears. it also helps to pinch your nose and try to blow without letting the air out of your mouth to pressurize the throat region and sometimes that allows the pressure to equalize just enough between the two sides fir the inner ear to allow the Eustacia tube to open on its side. Sometimes too much pressure imbalance between the two sides can actually lock the inner ear closed.

Oddly I never get air sick or motion sick but get me on a boat in open ocean and I am a fish feeder. Go figure I HAVE to have the patch because I blow chunder on Dramamine.
