What do you consider "dogma?"

I see this as a common used word here so I'm curious.

What makes a particular religion or faith "dogma?"

Is it a lack of evidence or proof? Or is it those that may offend you?

Dogma is the doctrine ... the tenants of the particular church ... it is
what gives the church purpose. Without it, the church has no reason for
being...

The teachings of Jesus, of Islam, of Buddha, etc. ... take your pick.

I'm off - lovely weekend to you.

Bye Art gurl :)

Why is the teaching of Jesus dogma? Is it because people feel that you
can't prove it?

dogma is defined as

1. A doctrine or a corpus of doctrines relating to matters such as
morality and faith, set forth in an authoritative manner by a church.

2. An authoritative principle, belief, or statement of ideas or
opinion, especially one considered to be absolutely true.

That seems to fit all religious teachings....

I would. I would -respect- their private beliefs, but I would still
apply the label 'dogma'. I don't think 'dogma' is always 'bad'.

Dogma seems to be negative and offensive here. It used everytime a
person expresses their beliefs.

Massage how would you define dogma?

Dogma is just a word that is used to encompass a set of particular rules
or principals. I couldn't tell you why the word is dogma, but the
definition I learned many years ago indicated that it often pertains to
doctrines associated with faith.

If the word harbors anything that offends, I am not aware of it. So I
might even ask someone of a particular faith what their basic dogma is.

To me it's just a word with a particular definition.

Thank you Red for clarifying that. Excellent post!

The reason it appears negative to me is because the way people use it
when in disagreement I guess, well based on my experience.

haha and the way it is pronounced feels MEAN

DOG-MA...YOU DOG I don't know maybe it's just me.

I see it as simply a belief regarding which a person is inflexible. It
could be doctrinal, or religious, but it also -not- be. There are also
personal dogmas. There are a lot of dogmas involved in the scientific
community, for better or worse.

Wildone - actually, I may be wrong but I seem to remember that the word
is actually pronounced dog me' or literally dogmay. It's just been
adapted to dogmah - maybe the pronunciation is an offense? Oh wait,
this is the written word, silly me. noway

I agree. For some people, -their- inflexible beliefs are simply beliefs
(or even 'truths'), but -my- inflexible beliefs are 'dogmas'.

The word is used by some to manipulate peoples' emotions, to place
differing beliefs on un-equal grounds from the start, without even
examining whether its really fair to do so.

i wonder why Titus said this. When the NT was not written yet?

Titus 2:6-10

6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things
showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in (doctrine) showing
integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be
condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing
evil to say of you.

9 Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well
pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not pilfering, but
showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of Yahweh
our Savior in all things.
NKJV
Yahweh our Savior? huh. Doctrine what doctrine could he be talking
about?........ Miles

Miles your saviour did not write Titus.

Paul did.

Sometime around 66 AD.

Therefore it came after the Apostolic Creed and before the Nicean Creed.

Either way there was Doctrine established... but not by Jesus.

Yahshua did not establish no new doctrine. What he did was prove
that the law could be kept. He showed the true meaning of it's spirit.
The doctrine of yahweh our savior. I was making apoint that the doctrine
they were talking about was the Holy Torah. Also that they realized that
salvation is give by Yahweh not Yahshua. He came in that name to prove
that his name meang Yahweh is/our Salvation. Yahshua dieing and taking
on the sins of the world. Yahweh granted to him that salvation would go
through out the world. The Holy Spirit now residing in man. A vessel
made without hands.. People refuse the Torah except what may benifit
them. But by refusing the Torah they are lost in a world of confusion.
The Torah is the key to understanding. The NT can not be understood
without a real good knowledge of at least the Torah. Sure Titus did not
write it but the reference to doctrine is important. Blessings of
Shalom... Miles
