George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld covered up that hundreds of innocent men were sent to the Guantánamo Bay prison camp because they feared that releasing them would harm the push for war in Iraq and the broader War on Terror, according to a new document obtained by The Times.

The accusations were made by Lawrence Wilkerson, a top aide to Colin Powell, the former Republican Secretary of State, in a signed declaration to support a lawsuit filed by a Guantánamo detainee. It is the first time that such allegations have been made by a senior member of the Bush Administration.

Colonel Wilkerson, who was General Powell’s chief of staff when he ran the State Department, was most critical of Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld. He claimed that the former Vice-President and Defence Secretary knew that the majority of the initial 742 detainees sent to Guantánamo in 2002 were innocent but believed that it was “politically impossible to release them”.

General Powell, who left the Bush Administration in 2005, angry about the misinformation that he unwittingly gave the world when he made the case for the invasion of Iraq at the UN, is understood to have backed Colonel Wilkerson’s declaration.

I am not going to call this silly Bush Bashing because Bush screwed up badly. His whole Iraq champagne was not though through and on top of that their micromanaging caused them to make huge mistakes like just opening up the prisons. The thing is that innocent people get hurt all the time.What is more unfortunate is that Americans are led around by their noses with the nose ring of fear. Now in all fairness Obama has also resorted to fear and instilling his fears into his political motivations to try to get America to see things his way. Gitmo is still open under his administration.

The innocents hurt in this are tools. This is a calculated plan to spread more fear out in the middle east of us.

Again the real enemy is not Bush (Cheny though?). The real enemy is big business and big industry. They are the ones pulling ALL of the strings behind the scenes. The real enemy is the human heart and human nature. It is so east you point the finger at America and point out the evil within us but look at the world in general. How about Tibet? we sure are not oppressing them. How about NKorea and their constant threats of nuclear war? On top of that how many innocent people have those suicide bombers killed? Far more than Gitmo has!

There are coverups far worst than the one you mentioned. How about the nuclear waste tossed into the Pacific? Tianamin Square? Even the reason we got into the Viet Nam war was covered up. When political motivations and big business are calling the shots all KINDS of bad stuff will get covered up. Gitmo is nothing new. Worst is no one has a sound plan to close it down. Worst is we should be handling enemy combatants with a kinder gentler hand. That is such BS! Innocent people always get caught under the wheels of war. That is very sad and unfortunate. Unfortunately we didn't fire the first shot per say. Big business's Machiavellian manipulations led to this. The American people got the blame!
