I'd recommend John Updike's "Rabbit" series and Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide" series. Just personal favorites.

Updike's writing is just excruciatingly beautiful in its precision. His ability to assemble words -- exactly the right words, with exactly the right flow and rhythm -- elevates his work above and beyond the status of mere "writing" -- it's an art form the likes of which I've never seen elsewhere.

Adams proves that sci-fi and humor can coexist AND do so while still being entertaining and thought-provoking. His work was a major influence on my first book.

Boy's Life by Robert McCammon

My all time favorite book- my copy is literally falling apart because I've read it so many times.

Seen through the eyes of a 12 year old boy in early 1960's Alabama. It's a coming of age story as the boy learns about and deals with first love, death, racism, bullies. It's also a murder mystery as the boy secretly helps his father find out who killed a man they saw in a car before it sank into a lake. It's also a ghost story as a ghost car haunts the back roads. And also a fantasy as a prehistoric creature lives in the river, and another terrorizes drivers near the woods.

And that doesn't even scratch the surface.

Little, Big by John Crowley

Another favorite I've read several times.

The story of the Drinkwater family who can communicate with the Faery world. The book spans over a hundred years(from early 20th century, to a future America) following several generations of the family at their country estate(Edgewood), and those living in The City.

Only two? That's tough...

"Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls...because it's one of the first books that had me literally sobbing. I fell totally in love with reading after getting that kind of an emotional experience from a book!

Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series...because I'm addicted to his writing and it's a cool collection. I named my kid Jake. laugh
