(May 4) -- CNN, which bills itself as "the most trusted name in news," gets some support for that claim from a new survey. But the poll done by "60 Minutes" and Vanity Fair shows Fox News a close second in trustworthiness.

Pollsters asked a random sample of 1,026 people nationwide which of the following they consider to be the most trustworthy source of daily news in the United States: CNN, Fox News, other major broadcast networks, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or Comedy Central's "The Daily Show." MSNBC was not among the options given.

Six in 10 viewers picked one of the two cable news rivals, with 32 percent for CNN and 29 percent for Fox. Only 13 percent selected other networks, while 8 percent named the Times and 7 percent preferred the Journal. Comedian Jon Stewart's show was rated most trusted by only 4 percent.

"The numbers are staggering, and continue to prove that cable news has a relationship with viewers that is more comfortable and trusting than the other forms of news dissemination," said Mediaite's Steve Krakauer.

The poll highlights a clear difference in the political leanings of CNN and Fox fans. Fifty percent of Republicans voted for Fox, and 46 percent of Democrats said they trust CNN most. Still, 12 percent of Democrats favored Fox and 22 percent of Republicans preferred CNN.

Two days before the survey results were released, President Barack Obama urged University of Michigan graduates to expose themselves to a variety of news sources.

"... if you're someone who only reads the editorial page of The New York Times, try glancing at the page of The Wall Street Journal once in a while. If you're a fan of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, try reading a few columns on the Huffington Post website," Obama advised in his commencement address Saturday. "It may make your blood boil; your mind may not be changed. But the practice of listening to opposing views is essential for effective citizenship."

Slate's William Saleton followed up on the president's appeal with this list of 10 ways to escape a partisan echo chamber.

First of all ther poll was done by a liberal group and within that poll they showed Fox as a CLOSE second, so once again your comments make no sense.

You just want to attack, attack and attack. I don't think I have ever in my life met someone so negative.

Nothing pisses me off more than a lying journalism source, as a practicing journalist this is perhaps the most ridiculous **** I've seen in my 25 years of life. You spreading around their piss poor links is doing nothing but feeding fuel to their big lying machine. Find a more reputable news source to link to and quit using Fox who have been proven more than once to be a source of lies, and God only knows how much they have lied in the past.

Doesn't change the fact that they blatantly lie, just mean that people would rather hear blatant lies than truth.

That doesn't mean everyone thinks Fox is a good news source or tells the truth. There are people like me who watch just to see what they'll say next. It certainly does not mean I trust what Fox reports.

True that! They also censor anyone who tries to tell the truth (like Ron Paul). All the other MSM lies too, of course, which is why I don't pay attention to the MSM.

Yes Fox is the mainstream media. You can say what you want about Fox.I think they are much more informative than CNN and way more entertaining. They have had high ratings for many years now.The reason they have high ratings is because they are giving the American people what they are asking for.A no BS look at the world today through a clear window.CNN is like listening to whining baby with a overloaded diaper.Anderson cooper is especially nauseating with his endless gabarge about how bad America is,calling peacefull God fearing Christians terrorist, and how bad the military sucks. In one interview he did a interview with taliban snipers(including video of US soldiers taking head shots by snipers)and called this garbage newsworthy.

People are feed up with the CNN and their liberal views of "America sucks".America is telling CNN and the liberals that "You suck" and we are not going to listen to you anymore. If it wasn't for the hospitals, universities, schools, and other public buildings that have CNN on their TV sets 24/7 I doubt CNN would have a audience.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/28/cable-news-ratings-april_n_554295.html

The ratings are in for April 2010, and Fox News has hit a ratings milestone: its 100th consecutive month as the top cable news network.

In primetime (8-11PM), Fox News averaged 1.92 million total viewers (485,000 A25-54) to take first place; MSNBC came in second with 785,000 total viewers (239,000 A25-54). CNN came in third in total viewers with 596,000, beating HLN's 512,000; in the A25-54 demo, however, HLN placed third with 166,000 to CNN's 148,000.

For the full day, HLN actually placed second in the demo with 134,000 A25-54 viewers, behind only Fox News' 287,000. CNN beat MSNBC in total viewers (413,000 to 391,000), but MSNBC beat CNN in the demo (129,000 to 123,000).

Though Fox News remains #1, it is showing some signs of wear and tear: the network was down 19% in primetime total viewers and 13% in the prime demo compared to last April; it was down 17% in total day total viewers and 16% in the total day demo as well. Of course, Fox News is not the only network that's down — CNN is down 40% in primetime and 35% in total day in both total viewers and the demo, and MSNBC is down 6% in total viewers in both primetime and total day — but it is a sign that Fox News' once unstoppable ratings growth has tapered off.

On the program level, MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" broke into the top 10 (although Olbermann's ratings are down 13% in total viewers and 30% in the demo), but Fox News programs continued to dominate. Interestingly, for the first time since he debuted on Fox News, Glenn Beck did not grow year-over-year: in fact, his show was down 7% in total viewers and 6% in the demo. Also for the first time, MSNBC's repeats of both "Countdown" (10PM) and "The Rachel Maddow Show" (11PM) beat CNN's two-hour "Anderson Cooper 360" head-to-head.

They all do, but that isn't the point. All media to some degree lies, objective journalism is dead because it doesn't pay, it doesn't pay because politics and religion altogether pay other people to feed us bulls***, we eat said bulls*** like it is Corn Flakes and in turn spread it around like a plague.

The point isn't whether one journalism source lies more than the other, the point is that absolutely NO journalism source should lie. Also another point is that Fox was caught lying, numerous times actually, to the extent that they even had the White House call them out on it.

This is why I'm not in the political forum all that much, there is too much left/right bulls*** that it drowns out any sort of truth in the matter. If one isn't slinging s*** at the other the other is slinging s*** at them, it isn't a wonder our country is as f***** up as it is now because we can't even sort through our own s*** to come up with a valid answer to the growing problem.

Mark my words, you will at one time need objective journalism to wade through the tons and tons of s*** so you don't have to...if I were you I would start now and quit watching the trash shoveled to you from the major news organizations and start looking into a good independent news source, hell, even BBC is better than the crap we get here in the states.

like I've said before

the purpose in life of FOX and CNN is not to provide news. Their purpose is to sell advertising. They promise a minimum number of a certain demographic to the advertisers. And they tailor the news to keep that demographic watching

in other words they tell you what you want to hear so they can sell you to their advertisers

CNN has a demographic that is different than FOX's and so they have different avertisers

Shining the light on evil may seem like negativity. I see it as exposing the evil so, it can be righted instead of just swept under a rug where it festers.

I've also read of polls that show that 19% of Americans believe they are in the top 1% of income earners in the US.
The only thing I glean from that poll -like most others- is that pollsters have and annoying tendency (coincidental or not) to interview some of the dumbest among us.

well, thats an excellent point,,,and explains why in the two decades since I became an adult,, I have not been participant in ANY polls(besides the ones the networks themself have you call in on, which is probably going to shine more light on which demographic watches their programming than it is on anything else,,,)
