On this day in 1876, Custer was defeated by the Sioux at the battle of
the Little Big Horn.

How and why do you think the defeat happened?

So, how do you feel about it?

Vanity and under estimation!

What I have always found interesting, the two best know battles of the
west was Custer Last Stand and The Alamo. Both were lost by the US and
both were domed from the start.

If Custer would have waited for the rest of the forces (gen Crook) and
not split up his forces he wouldnt have lost! Custer was an egomaniac
and wanted all the glory for him self!

I agree the Alamo was lost when the US gov. wouldnt let Houston help,
but the men at the Alamo didnt know that at first. Still they could have
surrendered when they found out, but chose not to!

I saw it on the history channel!! Custers detachment was singled out and
wipe out. The other force that was down by the river fared a little
better, but not much!!!

Hey JJflowerforyou

Id like to see it. On the history channel, they were finding casings
left from the batttle, and your right there was no where to hide. A feww
tried to run for it, they found caseings leading away down the hill to
prove it. It wasnt the heroic stand depicted in the movies!!!

The County of Amelia is rich in history and her citizens take an active
interest in her past. The County, named for Princess Amelia, daughter of
George II of England, was created by a legislative act in 1734, and in
1735, it was created from Prince George and Brunswick Counties. Then, in
1754, Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County, and later the
County was reduced to its current size when Nottoway County was
separated in 1789. During the Revolutionary War, in 1781, Amelia was
raided by British forces under General Tarleton. Eighty-four years
later, the Amelia County records amazingly survived through the Civil
War. According to legend, they were saved in April, 1865 because Federal
General George Custer, of Little Big Horn fame, placed a guard over the
Amelia County Clerk’s Office with orders that all records be
preserved.

Custer should have stayed in Virginia.

I think it was pure arrogance the whole nine yards, thinking that the
Sioux wouldn't have the strength to fight such a fine General and his
men.

Good morning, everyone!

I would very much like to visit the memorial someday. Does the memorial
also cover the individual Sioux who died there?

I GPSed my way to the location of the Sand Creek Massacre a few months
ago, and found no memorial at all to those who were massacred.

Part of Custer's arrogance seems to be one that many commanders and
their troops have shared: a disdain for "the Enemy". Some soldiers
become convinced that God is on their side, and that the enemy is
"evil", and thus fail completely to understand the motives, will, and
capacity of "the enemy". They make major tactical and strategic mistakes
as a consequence, and oddly, only seem to dig themselves a deeper hole
when they run into any information that might instead suggest an
intelligent "enemy" fighting for a just cause.

This must be some special form of insanity.
