Topic: When do billboards go to far?

I was reading an article on atheist billboard ads recently. They have a billboard over the Lincoln tunnel with a nativity scene saying " you know it's a Myth". Now I am all for freedom of beliefs and everything but how can you try to argue that an add targeting any religion saying that hey you know your religion is a lie is not offensive? Particularly during a Holiday season of that religion. I would be equally disturbed if a Christian religious group did this to say a Jewish or Muslim religious group during one of their holidays.

well they have the legal right to do this. I, personally, don't agree with any side that goes after another. I would rather they talk about their beliefs and not bash others.

But that is just me...what do I know?ohwell

I agree but the atheist group who put that billboard said they are not trying to be offensive. I find that hard to believe.

They are putting up billboards here in Denver too protesting Christmas. They do this every year and the only reason they do it is to be as offensive as possible. They only pick on Christians because they know the Christians are a easy target.I would like to see these Atheist put up signs during Islamic Ramadan and protesting it.It is celebrated through out the country and Obama loves this Islamic holiday.

All these people are doing is rubbing salt in a open wound. No Christian is going to stop celebrating Christmas because of some stupid billboard. It will however just give Atheist more negativity and more unpopularity then they already have by upsetting Christians during their most sacred holiday.

Atheist are not much different then the gays.Preach tolerance and unity yet never miss the opportunity to insult them and demand they throw away everything they hold near and dear.Of course since it is this time of the year we can start reading about all the worthless lawsuits by Atheist demanding Christmas is taken off the school calenders or that Christmas tree must be cut down and burned.

it is all about money, nothing else... the more people join the atheist groups, the more money they make, just like the churches...
i don't see people crying when the church billboards want to recruit new members...

That is in no way saying any of your beliefs are false. What if I said Gandhi loves you? Even historians believe Jesus was a real person. Was he the son of God. No one can really say. Does he love you? I dont know, but it still isn't saying your beliefs are wrong.

Isn't the billboard stating what Atheists believe, though? If you have a problem with the billboard, do you have a problem with others that state religious beliefs?

I am a Christian who is well informed of these cases.I can't even remember in all my life any other religious group in this country demanding Christmas decorations be removed or Christmas banned other than the Atheists. Why would they?If they protest Christmas because they find it offending then the Atheist are going to use the same logic to wipe away their religion using the same argument.

I am not going to waste time posting which has to be hundreds of cases over the years by Atheist suing the state and Christian originations because of their religion. We have all seen the news,we all know who is the first to complain about Christmas, and we all know who is behind these negative attack ads.

Board....I think a better analogy would be if Christians put up signs saying "Atheists are in denial" or something to that effect.

I wouldn't think that is right to do either.

If Atheists want to put up signs saying something about themselves....then I'm all for that.

My problem is putting down what someone believes (no matter what the belief is) and I don't pay them much attention because I don't think that highly of them. When I say them I mean the organization/individual that does it, not the whole group. I don't agree when Christians do it any more than when anyone else does it.

As far as the legalities, they have the right under the 1st amendment and I wouldn't want to take that away from anyone. I am responsible enough to ignore things like that.

Anyway.....just my thoughts on it laugh

ostensible" : being such in appearance : plausible rather than demonstrably true or real

by this definition, I deem most of what I was taught in american history as ostensible(for demonstration and not provable),

perhaps intellectuals should put up billboards with something like 'american history, our favorite half truth'

I agree, that it is offensive, but I also agree that being offensive is one of those great 'american' privileges that I dont trust anyone else to define for me by making laws against speech

Nothing more comical than people getting huffy and puffy over a billboard, kind of reminds me of video games...ahhh, nostalgia.

That is exactly right!A atheist can put up a billboard saying we don't believe in God.That is their own opinion. But this billboard is put up at Christmas showing three wise men going to Jesus saying it is a myth. That is a attack on Christianity with out a doubt.

I am also wondering where these billboards are where they say Jesus loves you.I have yet to see one.I see signs on church property now and then but a full size billboard.

Get real! slaphead

Christians haven't proved the existence of god, and I don't give a damn about faith or anybodies feelings. Its a myth, all religion is a myth.

Well have you heard the absents of proof is not the proof of absents? Saying that there is no proof of God so God must not exist is failed logic. I am not saying he exists mind you I am saying just that logic is flawed. Science has lots of theories on things but there is no proof that the theory is correct etc.

BTW I am not getting huffy puffy about billboards. If you want to put up an offensive bill board go ahead. What I am saying is don't pretend oh we are not being offensive. Just man up and say yea we have money and want to be a jerk. I am totally cool with that. There are plenty of religious people that are jerks.

3 billion plus Christians around the world don't believe it is a myth.Even Islam writes about Jesus as a real person. That is 4.5 billion people that believe Jesus was a real person.

I think if you added up all the people in the world who truly believed in myths like the tooth fairy and Santa claus you probably wouldn't have a few hundred let alone 4.5 billion.
