(Newser) – America’s least-favorite protest group is at it again. The Westboro Baptist Church will picket the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, it announced today on its website, the charmingly named godhatesfags.com. The church didn’t elaborate on Edwards' specific transgression, but given that its ultraconservative congregation usually gets its jollies protesting the funerals of dead soldiers, it probably didn’t need much of a reason.

The church handling Edwards’ funeral tells the Washington Post that it’s aware of the planned protest, and that its staff is currently meeting to decide how to handle the situation.

Maybe I was raised differently, but it seems to me that a funeral is the last place you should hold a demonstration. A funeral is a celebration of a person's life and a time to mourn. I don't think it was ever meant to be used as a platform to impose your views (which are clearly fruitcake ones according to sign titles) on others.

i wonder if any of them thought"that god hates people who protest in the name of God at funerals when the loved ones should be allowed to grieve in peace, but like most hypocrits i'm sure they will find a way to justify their ignorance and stupidity in the name of God... of course..what a frickin world...smokin

Its about getting large amounts media attention to their religious views, not the person or the venue. It is all about them.

Perhaps they should consider attraction rather than promotion.

MM I know why they're doing it. If I or some other nobody were having a funeral, that group wouldn't even bother. But because it's going to attract major media attention they are going to be there with bells on touting signs. It's a funeral! You'd think that people would show a little respect.

I guess I expect that kind of action from a radical religious group.

I am not sure what in the world is wrong with you or those people, but respectful of the deceased and their family members seems to be beyond you and this group........it seems respect is something lacking in todays newest generation.........am shocked and surprised

Ultra conservatinve congregation???These people obviously are not Christians because Jesus Christ was a Jew and so were the people God called "his chosen"who he loved. For these idiots to say that God hates his own son and his own people, and his own promised land is beyond stupid.

I think most people and especially other Christians can see this group for what it is.It's bunch of Atheists using God as a excuse to do two things...

1.To provoke anger and hate towards Christians.
2.To provoke anger and hate towards anyone they do not like.

If I was a person who really hated religion what is the best way to give it a black eye and make it look bad?Get 40 or 50 other people who think the same way I do,claim to be that religion you hate, and then be as vile and offensive as possible.

Fortunately everyone has figured out that these people in no way represent Christianity and they are nothing but a bunch of idiots who hate everyone and everything including the concept of Christianity. They would put the world "We hate" on those signs but since that would be considered hate speech they have to use the word God for a excuse to exercise their religion.

I would not want to be one of these people who are judged by God when they die.Hellfire and torment will be their new home.

The only BS part was the attack on Vice President Dick Cheney.
