okay, so i need help.

i recently inherited a bunch of guns. i have a list of the guns, but not their serial numbers...and as i try and collect them, i'm running across some dishonest folks who are trying to say that they aren't my guns.

is there a way to find out what guns my father purchased, so that i can match the serial numbers?

Unless your father kept records and receipts as to where, what, and from who, you are pretty much S.O.L..

A lot of guns are sold every day in this country and very few records are kept. You can try writing the manufacturer if you have the serial numbers but that usually will only give you the first buyer or dealer. If he got them second hand you may again be out of luck.

*sighs* i don't have a single serial number. i have a hand-written list, telling me what gun is where...who has each one...and what kind of gun it is.

the people who have them aren't being very cooperative.

don't go alone when you confront the people that have the weapons. it would be best to take someone that knows the person with the weapon and your grandfather, so they can back you up on the list your grandfather gave you. it is your word against theirs at this point, and unfortunately for you, they have possession of the weapons. if they still won't give in with you and a witness, you could try a lawyer, if you have an actual will that documented the weapons and who possessed them. thing is motown is right. unless the possessor willingly turns the weapons over, you don't have many legal options

Sorry to say,You have kind of a problem. If people don't want to give them back. They are to be made part of the Estate. If there is a will at all.
The only way I got my Brothers guns without probate, was there was no will and no Estate! I would contact a Lawyer to see how to handle this asap.Good luck!

the will is currently going through probate, with the hearing set for the thirteenth of this month.

i am the sole heir and the executor of the estate.

however, there are no serial numbers listed, just models and who currently has possession.

i've verified all of two, as the lawyer currently has possession of those.

one of the men listed is actually trying to say that the truck and boat he has weren't my father's, either...however, i DO have VIN numbers for those.

It's nearly impossible without a bill of sale. When my father died in 1995 I inherrited 27 guns. All guns were in his possession. In order to transport I got a statement from the police in Fl stating they were part of his estate if I were to get stopped. I transported them across 6 state lines to get them home without getting stopped.

i like hand guns and rifles and shotguns. brought up with them in Mentucky in the U. S. i am not an expert, but know a lot about firearms. i spend several years in the U. S. Army (Airborne, Special Forces). Know more about retail (personal) guns and ammo.

be very careful then. some gun owners own them illegally and don't want to be identified with them, especially if they may be "hot".

I'm afraid you are out of luck. Since the guns are in the possession of others, there is no way to prove they were your father's. Even if you had the serial numbers, they could just say that he gave it to them. And, without a receipt with serial numbers, there is no recourse for you. I'm sorry. frown

what state within the U. S. do you live? I'd definately like to see or have a friend see your collection.
