I would definately take notice.

I don't plan on changing for anyone, so if their are things about me that they do not like, then friends are fine but I wouldnt try for anything else, out of respect for both of us..

If someone has preferences listed in their profile, do you pay attention to them, or do you hope they just won't matter?

For example, if someone has an age range preference, or a distance preference, but you think you'll hit it off, will you ignore those preferences?

If someone takes time to list a preference, I am respectful of it.

Preferences are prejudices?

Of course they are.
You rule out a huge group of people, people
totally unknown to you, for reasons you have
decided upon.
Call it what you like.
It is your own set of prejudices that set
your limits.
You prejudge a person by ruling them out
because you THINK chances are real good
you won't like them, for whatever reason
you have established.
Nothing wrong with that.
You know yourself better than anyone.
You are no doubt saving some time.
But it is prejudice all the same.
It simply meets the definition.

YOu're making things more negative than they need to be. If you don't like preferences, no problem. You don't have to have any.

I always would respect a woman's profile preferences. One thing i will say is both men and women need to re-evaluate their stated preferences. Moral and ethical standards should always remain. However, outside of this we need to make sure we have reasonable preferences or we could cut ourselves short.

What are "reasonable preferences?"

If a person interests you then what does it hurt just to say hello the worse that could happen is you could make a friend. It's everyone's opinion if they want to pay attention to the preferences, as for me I will respect their preferences.

I've got no problem at all with chatting with new people.

People use the term preference in different contexts. I find some use it to mean 'mandates' , which could be a type of prejudice.

Others simply mean 'preference',, As in, I prefer chocolate to vanilla ice cream. This does not in any way rule out vanilla ice cream, it just states which I like MORE.

Other preferences, like no smoking, or drinking, or having a college education, are not necessarily prejudices where someone is prejudging a person,,, they are more results of experience about what a person enjoys or doesnt enjoy in another person.

I know great people who are smokers, but I prefer not to date a smoker. This doesnt entirely rule smokers out, it just means that I prefer one over the other. I have dated a smoker and married a smoker, they didnt taste like smoke. That taste and that smell are gross to me, so I avoid them,, thats a preference.

I do read profiles and the ones I by pass are the ones that are carbon copies of the last one I read.

Guys if you want a super model just say it and we can just cut to the chase ..normal women don't think of themselves as super models, we find fault in our own bodies faster than any man can.

And don't try to look perfect we know the words Perfect man are a myth they don't exist any more than the perfect woman does...

I'll admit I'm close to perfect hahahahahahha but there is that one thing.

When it comes to dating, my preferences are what I prefer. Could I be interested in someone who does not fit them? Possibly.

However, when it comes to age preferences, while I don't have specific ages I go for, I cannot see going for someone who is 20 years older than me. It just wouldn't work well, as we wouldn't be at the same place in life and likely would not have a whole lot in common.

So, I guess it really depends on the preferences.

hmmmm I did not want a heavy drinker or smoker, nor someone 20 years younger than me..
Am I prejudist ( thats a bummer of a word to spell it just doesnt look right) anyway maybe I am but the fact is, I dont like the smell of smoke and dont want to cuddle up to someone and kiss him if that is all I smell, although at the same time I dont have anything against people smoking I just dont want to kiss someone who does. If I had fallen in love with someone who smoked I would have adjusted but wouldnt have enjoyed it, so my preference would be a non smoker.
As for Drinking well I dont and I dont want to be involved with anyone who does.. Im hapy for people to drink but dont want to have to deal with the rubbish that goes with it. been there done that.

and as for dating someone 20 years younger than me, nope just not interested,

Oh and I like vanilla icecream and would prefer it, however I dont think I am prejudgist against chocolate, I just would rather vanilla..

I see absolutely no problem with not wanting someone 20 years younger, or someone who does not smoke. You're just choosing what works best for you at this point in your life.

Predjudices versus preference seems a little extream in some situations. I am sure there are preference that are rooted in predjudice but sometimes people just want to avoid controversy.

I was really shocked by the intense responses I got to a post about how to handle the issue of smoking. Since the majority of my family and many friends work in the legal tobacco industry I am not against it but because of my own health issues don't want to date a smoker.

After all the natural conclusison to a date site is to spend one on one time with a compatiable person why set up a relationship that will take accomodation? I hardly think I am the only viable female available so if I'm not in certain circles it isn't going to radically effect the evolution of the planet. lol

But does seem like some folks take it as an across the board rejection of their human value if you just don't get excited about their combination of stats. Especially ones that would be impossible to change.

Does it stink sometimes that we are not a perfect match for everyone. Yea. Especially when their other markers match but sometimes that is just how it is.

No.
You are making negative comments about my
personal opinion.
Which you solicited.
Pay attention.

Well I am on this site for more then just helping me find a mate, and so I have no restrictions setup in my preferences to exclude people from contacting me. I will be the filter for that, thanks!

Yes, I do read profiles and read between the lines on them pretty well too.

Some men who contact me do not read mine though because they wouldn't contact me if they had.

I don't have filters either, as I enjoy chatting with everyone.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to tell who hasn't read my profile before contacting me.
