I'm always myself whether I'm in forums or around real people, whether people believe or not is up to them but I will always stay true to myself and let people see that.. If I play make believe I won't feel good about myself as a person

I'm totally different in person. Actually this isn't even me. My keyboard has been taken over by a secret alliance trying to send a code.

Are you the same in the forums as you are in person? Do you let people know what you're really like? Or, do you play a part and be who you want to be, rather than yourself?

I think that even if you're totally honest in everything you type on here, people can still get the wrong idea of who you are. I think it takes the 'in person' to really get to know someone. I've been here a while and have gotten to "know" some of you pretty well from what you write but, until we've met, spent time together, all I have to base anyone here on is what's written and my interpretation of that.

I try to be myself on here and think I have been. I probably read more than I post but that's me in real life. I'm more of a background kind of guy, I observe. The guitarist, not the singer or that's me behind the mixing board.

I've opened up the Mingle fam quite a few times when I needed support because this is a great site with some awesome people here. My advise to anyone trying to be someone they're not on this site is to get real because it's hard enough to try and figure out who you are behind a picture and a paragraph.

I do agree that even if you're being completely yourself, some will get the wrong idea. Though, those tend to be the ones who don't want to get to know you better.

I disagree because I don't think it's really possible to know someone by just reading what they type on a dating forum

I'm going by what has happened here. The people who consistently get the wrong idea about me have been people who haven't tried to get to know me.

Of course to get to know someone, you have to do more than just read what they type in the forums.

I think there's only so much you can represent about your personality over the internet. At best this is a fairly accurate representation. I post my writing, which is a link to my subconscious and dreams, which is the most honest part of me, I think. So I guess I'm the same in that sense.

But I think that a question that goes along with this is how well you really know yourself.

most people here know the real me on the surface but not what makes me tick. Only those really close to me know that

See, you're one of those people I don't feel I know at all really, except for bits and pieces here and there from what you post.

you know the real me on the surface. I don't tell everyone (except people I'm close to and talk to often) what makes me tick (personal things)

in the forums I'm pretty upfront, likes to joke, likes to debate, likes to help. Those are surface things

the why's of who I am isn't always told on the forums....however many things have been

I think I can agree with this - I get close to very few people. There a few people- not many - I talk to outside the forums

but no one has ever met me in person and I don't believe you can really get to know someone well without meeting in person and spending a significant amount of time with them

but as far as on here - yes - I am prolly pretty much the same in person - maybe quieter - less talkative IRL than I am on here - I think I've said before that I think people from here would be surprised at how shy I am in person

If someone doesn't know themselves very well, does that mean others can't get to know them?

Those that take the time to get to know me away from the forums will definitely get to know me better, rather than just chatting here.

the question is how accurately u are represented here. Of course in order to evaluate that one must have enough self knowledge to assess the answer. to that end I agree your question is important. perceptions are odd bedmates - so the answers could be many

I may feel I am represented here accurately- to some degree - but someone else may have another view once meeting me

I'm as close to me online as offline as you can be considering it's text...though I am more shy in real life around strangers.

Even in reality you never really know anyone.

Why do you feel you never know anyone?

they're getting all deep and profound here.
no one will ever get to know me because i'll only share a certain amount of what goes on in my brain with the world.
i'll only share a certain amount of what's happened in my life with the world.
i'll only share a certain amount of what my hopes and dreams are with the world.
to really know me you'd have to have my brain,
but since that's impossible,
you'll never know the real me.

That includes everybody, no one ever really knows anyone ever! No one is a mind reader and no one can get inside someone's head no matter what they think.

Obviously, we're not going to know every single thing someone ever thinks. I don't think that means you can't get to know people, though. Have you never been close to someone before and really got to know many things about them?
