Any favorites or ones you enjoyed in particular?

Personally loved what I had read of The Walking Dead, but haven't followed properly since after high school.

Aside from that:
Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and The Killing Joke were all good, as was Brian Azzarello's Joker. Oh, and Hush, which I read almost entirely at work.
Batman/Scarecrow: Year One was also pretty good up until a rather lackluster ending. Still, the background information and story on Scarecrow was nice.
Spider-Man: Reign and Blue were pretty good too, but I wish there were more titles out. Spider-Man doesn't have enough good one-shots.

Well, there's me outing myself as a comic book geek here. laugh

I'm not a huge superhero comics fan, but Batman: Year One was excellent. I have a collection of Joker comics in Stacked Deck: The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told, which collects from the 30's up through the 90's.

Alien Vs Predator(if only the movie would have based itself on this)

Concrete: Killer Smile
Paul Chadwick's Concrete series is one of my favorites, a guy's brain is transferred to the body of an alien(a large concrete like body). But instead of being a superhero comic, Concrete just tries to function in a normal world, and does everything from being a bodyguard for a rock star, to helping a struggling family on a farm.

Killer Smile is about one of Concrete's assistants being taken hostage by a crazed bank robber, and Concrete trying to save him.

Yeah, Year One really went into the character and trying to take a grounded approach, I think that helps: superhero comics are often at their best when they break away from campiness and being overtly kiddie.
Not to say every 90's anti-hero was a good comic, but it's those moments where they approach more real world areas whilst still being fantastical or delve into the characters... it shows the potential the comics have, one unfortunately not all that well explored. (Spider-Man often had good examples of this, he was one of the most inwardly turned heroes in my opinion.)

I hate to jump on a wagon, but Watchmen has an excellent handling of the whole superhero concept as well, mainly in that characters were borderline or straight-up sociopaths and vigilantes.

I'm kind of interested in that series you mention. I'll have to look it up.

Me and my sibs lived and breathed comics when we were younger. My all time fav was Hellblazer which was about John Constantine.

the amazing spiderman, most batman series and spinoffs, xmen, watchmen, as far as allegiance....but I like a lot of random disconnected stuff too. I havent actually bought a cb or gn in over 3yrs, but I will nose about in the stores.

Yeah, that's how I spend half my time in Barnes & Noble.
I'm saddened at a lack of full-out comic book stores in my area though, especially since I think that would be a good fit for a job.

I grew up reading the horror comics- House Of Mystery, House Of Secrets, Ghosts, Haunted, The Many Ghosts Of Doctor Grave, Midnight Tales, Scary Tales, Weird Mystery Tales, The Unexpected, Boris Karloff Tales Of Mystery. Also the comic magazines Eerie and Creepy.

Considering a love of horror and comics, you'd think the two mixed for me, but I haven't really read much in the way of horror comics.
I (mostly) blame the lack of comic book shops near by.

42BlackBBW,

All good stuff, but all American. Do any of you collect 2000 AD (the only Brit comic I know).

No. We're a Marvel + DC family

The Hellblazer comic was based on a character that grew up in the east end of London like I did and the writing used a lot of east end colloquialisms (and I don't mean rhyming slang laugh). It was also cool when I recognised some of the places mentioned.

An ex of mine did use to read 2000AD but I preferred US comics.

The Maxx

the Maxx is one of my fav's to!

I also have to say "Scud the disposable assassin" is a good one.

And I also really enjoyed the death of superman. Very good story.

The goon is nice to. I still follow the Goon. He's my favorite comic book at the moment.

I don't know if manga counts, but my all time favorite comic is Inuyasha.

I also really really liked "Duke nukem Glorious bastard. That was a fun one. I have to stop here or I'll go on all day. I just love comics.

Yeah, of course manga counts.
