According to the news report I just heard (11pm ET), 4 fatalities, although there are bodies that they can not get to at this time due to unstability of the pieces in the water. There are a handful still missing, down from almost 30.
My heart and prayers go out to the familes of those that lost their lives and were injured during this trajedy.

This is the stuff nightmares are made of. One woman was quoted as saying that this doesn't happen in America. Oh my God, do you mean that we're not invincible? The Army Corps of Engineers went up river a bit to try to control the currents so that retrieving efforts could continue. It didn't work. Are you kidding me?! Ole Man River cannot be controlled. My point is, Yes, it can happen here.

you mean bridges only collapse in inner cities and third world nations.

There is now an order of every bridge of the same type to be examined to make sure that this doesn't happen any where else.
They are working on a bridge here in town, it goes right over the top of a river here. I won't go near the thing anymore, at least not the section that goes over the water.

((Barbisbigsister)). I am not worried about people on the internet... no one will be able to get to her... she pic is soo cute that one of the banks here are using it for a credit card promtion now.. her 4 year old brother took that pic..

((sushie)) they said the same thing when the towers were hit on 9/11 that no one thought such a tragdey could happen here.. WAKE UP PEOPLE... we are not invinclible... yes you never think it would hit sooo close to home and yes it scares you but it can happen to anyone one... I was reading an article online in my local paper last night about it and they were talking about the HWY 41 bridge in Chaska (where I live) that crosses the Minnesota River and how it collapsed while under construction in 1960.. scary they have been doing construction on that very bridge for the last year or so... I never though twice about driving over it...

((bayareagal)) the construction that they were preforming on that bridge had absolutly nothing to do with the structure they were re-surfacing the road... just routine maitnace here in Minnesota.. it was actually scheduled to be shut down to 1 lane that night...

the whole defiecieny thing was that in 2005 the bridge was given a 50 out of 120 on the inspection and it was up to the state to fix the bridge... in 2006 there were no flaws reported in the structure when it was inspected...

my friend told me that now it's all bridges in Minnesota that are to be inspected immediatly

I just read the story about a few of the victims and their lives. Now i am not trying to offend anyone so please! these are my own thoughts. The widow of the vegetable grower admitted in that interview her now deceased husand AND her were both here in America living as illegals from mexico. She also begged for money to help support her children and money to send her husbands body back to mexico. WTF?!!!! EXCUSE ME!!!! So its ok to be illegals AND still ask us LEGAL AMERICANS FOR MORE MONEY?!! This just rolled my stomach. Thats just about farked up. My MOST humble ohhhpinion.

Hi. I was just talking with a couple who lived in Minneapolis for years until moving to Minot (ND) about 5 years ago. They drove across the bridge many times as their favorite restaurant (I can't remember the name-I believe it was Mexican) was on the other side of the bridge. You never think anything like this will happen- and once it happens, you never think of how it could be prevented.....

It is so sad, and I'm so sorry for all of the victims and their poor families.
What kills me is why does it take a tragedy like this to happen before they say hmmmm, maybe we aught to check all bridges for structural damage.
Why in the heck aren't they checked more often than every two years?

AS of this afternoon (EST), the body count is now at 7. There are still at least 5 people still unaccounted for. Attempts are still being made. Removal of the debris has been halted until possibly next week, as they are worried any attempt to move it will cause the possible loss of the missing people. The current will pick up and possibly float them further down the river.

My prayers and condolences to the families of all those that were lost, injured and are still missing.

The time is inaccurate, I typed in EST and it just added the time. It was about 2 hours ago.
