I'm trying to quit, anybody else out there? Here's my number one reason to quit. My children. My kids tell me each and every day how much they love me. How can I let them down?

What are your reasons for quitting. Maybe we can support eachother right here on the site with words of encouragement.

It's only been 48 hours since my last cigarette. I was smoking about 10 cigarettes a day. Not much but it's a start.

How about you?

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, and it's mainly because lung cancer is so prevalent in my family tree. We have two scenarios in my lineage: smoke and die when you're 60, or don't smoke and live well into your 90s.

My dad and 3 of 4 grandparents died of lung cancer. That's hard to ignore. I swear, one of my uncles got lung cancer from just looking at a camel.

But my one grandmother just quit cold turkey on her 60th birthday and never smoked again. So it can be done....

You did it, that is great. Great for you.

I don't know if people realize how hard it really is to quit. They say the cravings are like that of a heroin or crack addict.

I quit smoking when I was carrying my second child who is 6 now. I quit for 5 years, but when my marriage started failing I started back. I'm scared that I'll always use smoking as a crutchnoway

Thanks all and congrats to all of you who have overcome.

I'm hoping it's not too late and wondering how much damage has been done. Lately just walking makes my chest hurt until I rest a minute. It's weird. I can take a kickboxing class and do fine, but walking up the stairs to the locker room, my chest feels like it's going to explode.huh

Angel....

I quit when I found out I was pregnant with my younger son. It was probably the best time to quit for me. I had 2 1/2 packs in my bag the day I quit. I think it is great that your trying to quit for your children, you really couldn't have a better incentive...

i think you need to quit for yourself, you can quit for other for a while but to quit long term its got to be for YOU. because you will be there when other are not. i tried to quit many times but always failed. but when i wanted to quit for me i was able to.
but i also knew it would benifit my family also. but me the most

You know what breaks my heart, imagining my 6 year olds face if I had to tell him I was dying of cancer. OMG, that in itself is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow. He is just the sweetest, smartest little boy and I want to see him grow up and have his own family one day. If I don't stop, I may not get that chance. And if I were to die from cancer, his little precious heart would be broken and I would be to blame. Smoking affects so many people in your life, not just you, but all the people that love you.
What a horrible thing nicotine is.

I'm only a day ahead of you poet, but each journey begins with just one step. We've taken that first step and the journey is ahead and we will take it one craving at a time, lol. They say the craving only last about 5 minutes when they hit, so if you can just get past the 5 minutes it will go away.

I quit just over 2 years ago- mostly because I was thinking about having a baby. but even when that ended up not being a factor I didn't start again. I did gain a lot of weight which I am almost done losing.

I think the best thing that helped me was execise- kick boxing and walking mostly. When you have a craving if you can manage to punch it out (or similar- e.g. the kick boxing) then it really helps.

Also, obviously early death is the worst consequence of smoking. but some of the minor ones are important tools- when you quit you realize how bad your clothes used to smell. And when you hug your kids/loved ones that's what they smell. A big ashtray. Yuck.

Hope it helps. You can always come here for support- everyone who's quit remembers how hard it was. Best of luck to you!!!

My daughter quit both times she was pregnant and then went back to it after the kids were about a year or so old, blamed it on stress. Even after the Dr. told her a few years ago an x-ray showed that she had the beginnings of early emphysema - do you think she will stop - hell no. She is 32 and still smoking. Makes me crazy but she won't listen to me, never has and if I try to tell her to quit, she will only smoke more so I keep quiet about it. She knows she needs to stop and needs to do it on her own.

There is a med out there now just for stopping smoking called Chantix and seems to be working really well. People who have smoked for 30-40 years are using it and it is working for most of them and apparently gets rid of the cravings. Just a thought if you choose to try some medication to help.

Good luck on stopping.
