It was an ordinary summer.
The flies came
And school got out.
You left in June
Taking your hair curlers
And a few clothes.
We got by all right.
You came back one Saturday.
We lay on the floor
Watching cartoons.
You came with a belt
Whipping us
One by One
Like it was your duty.
Dad took me to the social worker.
We went in a different room.
Alone.
She asked me to
Pull my underpants down.
I did.
So she could see
The blue-black bruises.
So I wouldn't have to
Go with you.
It was July when we
Went to the courthouse.
Dad took us
Out to eat first.
I didn't feel good.
They took you both
In a room and
Closed the door.
A man showed us
Faces of angels
Carved in the walls.
Trying to help.
When you came out
Dad said you
Got Dan and Mark.
I went downstairs
To the bathroom
By the elevator
And threw up.
You came soon after.
A big truck backed in.
Moving our life out.
Leaving threes of all the essentials
Plates, forks, spoons, towels.
When you left
I went back to the house.
To the living room.
All I could see
Were the tracks
We had made.
In the carpet
Matted down
From wear.

Don't view it as so sad. We have to remember that over half of marriages end in divorce...so most people have experienced some of the heartache of divorce. We all rise above it and keep going-human nature is very resiliant. We all grow stronger through what we experience.
