From Urban Dictionary: Freak Flag (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=freak+flag)

A characteristic, mannerism, or appearance of a person, either subtle or overt, which implies unique, eccentric, creative, adventurous or unconventional thinking.

David Crosby refers to long hair as a freak flag in his song 'Almost Cut My Hair'. "I feel like letting my freak flag fly."

Movie Character Ben compliments Meredith in 'The Family Stone', "You have a freak flag...you just don't fly it."

-----------------------------------------------------------

So, do you strive to be boringly normal, or do you proudly wave your Freak Flag? Maybe you put on a persona reeking of normalcy when you're in the workplace, but then - like Clark Kent stepping into a phone booth and shedding his suit and tie - you strip off that outer veneer when you're away from work to reveal your Inner Freak. Or maybe your Inner Geek, Nerd, Eccentric, or whatever else you want to call it. It's like different flavors of ice cream if you ask me, and we're all a bit geeky or eccentric about something.

I'm a total geek and I really don't try too hard to hide it. At my age I'd rather just be who I am, thank you very much. I read and write science fiction, for heaven's sake; that's a pretty big freak flag right there. I also do medieval historical re-creation in the Society for Creative Anachronism, and on top of that I'm a thespian. Theatre folks are often kind of eccentric when compared to the general population and I first got involved in that in 1979. So yeah... the biggest act for me would be acting 'normal', heheh. I can pull it off at work if I have to, but the rest of the time, fuggedaboutdit.

So, what makes you hoist your freak flag? Tell us how you get your geek on!

For some reason I don't get why people get lip and nose piercings and tattoos and then walk around expecting to be treated as 'normal.'

They obviously are waving their freak flags for all to see, and for getting a job, I'm sorry, they don't present a good first impression.

Loaf n' jug's written policy is no tattoos showing and yet I find even the managers at the store in this town are displaying tattoos. I don't get it.

I'm just me...and yes my hair, when I had hair, used to be to the middle of my back.

In the sixties when everyone was going around dressed in hippie garbs, I wore a business suite as my freak flag.

I guess I'm not looking so much to talk about fashion here in terms of clothing or hair or piercings, etc. on other people. If fashion or tats are what YOU geek on, that's fine.

This is more about personality, mannerisms and what kind of interests you have and talk (or don't) about that might be regarded as not completely mainstream. There might be outward signs of this in terms of what you wear (for me there aren't, unless I'm at one of my historical events) but basically, it's more a matter of intellectual than physical things. If you wear or display overt signs, feel free to talk about that, but I hadn't intended to start a thread where we complain about what we see other people wearing.

I see.

In that case, I am a conspiracy theory fan, and I believe in aliens.

I'm a non-conformists, and I have a problem with authority.

I read tarot cards, and I designed and sell an 80 card tarot deck.

(In a Bible belt town, that makes me a witch.)

I don't believe in marriage, as I believe it is a contract with THE STATE and that THE STATE is basically evil.

I believe there is an evil empire that is trying to take over the world and it ain't Pinky and the Brain.

HA! Half the people who posted here are so far away from "freak"....they make normal people seem weird.

Welcome to the internet.

Where the freaks try to blend in....and the prudes pretend to be freaks in the lame attempt at acceptance.

Not you Je

That depends on who you are compared to and what you consider to be normal.

Everything is relative.

I am extremely normal compared to the real freaks.

I don't get why people consider those with piercings or tattoos as being bad. I get you may not like what they look like, but does it mean they can't do jobs well? Of course not.

Allow me to state the obvious......I work in a casino. Most of our money clients are older. They got most of the money. Any business is in it for money....you want a dude with Half a dozen pieces of metal sticking out of their face?.....hit a tattoo parlour

You put that same skanky looking guy/gal in front of an older person with different values.....then expect to see that money walk out the door.

This is America. If you wanna be a freak.....go for it. If you hope to be wealthy...you better damned well pander to the people who got money.

Hint.....they ain't impressed with people with face piercings, dreadlocks, sagging pants or the fact that most kids can't figure out how to wear a baseball cap.

Professionalism.....look it up

The last time I got my freak on, I got arrested....If I wasn't so senile, I'd share the details...All I can remember is the holding tank smelled terrible and there wasn't any room to lie down....Oh yeah...And some biotch with orange and pink hair wanted to know why I wasn't wearing underwear....smokin

Social acceptability and success go hand in hand
And anarchy will always try to infiltrate the "Normalcy" of society
Appearance is EVERYTHING in success and society !
Just as "Looks" dominate the world of internet socials and dating

Yeah.....I agree.

Look your best. Only lazy slobs would disagree....unless they think that looking like they don't give a flirt is the answer.

But hey....the maggots who wear crocs and sweat pants might be right.

Nothin' wrong with Crocs, or sweatpants. There's a time and a place, though.
