A grieving Chicago father was shot dead Thursday, less than a week after his 13-year-old son was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Samuel Walker Sr. was gunned down in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood Thursday, just two days before his son, Samuel Walker Jr., was set to be buried.

The boy's mom is now arraigning a joint funeral for both father and son, family members told the Chicago Tribune.

The younger Walker was killed July 25 when someone opened fire outside of a convenience store on the city's West Side, police said.

"(Walker Sr.) was hurt as any father would be. Li'l Sam was his first son and child," the elder Walker's cousin Victoria Chamilien told the Chicago Tribune reported.

On Thursday, the 34-year-old dad had just gotten a haircut and was walking to pick up cigarettes when a shooter targeted him, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

He was shot in the head and in the torso and died at the scene, officials said.

No arrests have been made.

Police said the father belonged to the Vice Lords street gang, but it's unclear if the shooting was gang-related. Walker Jr. was also gang-affiliated, police said.

The shootings come after Chicago witnessed a bloody July 4 holiday weekend. Eighty-two people were shot and 14 people died during July's first weekend, Chicago's ABC 7 reported.

what stands to reason? the father was targeted, granted

but the son was killed during a driveby at a convenience store, when the news reports he was 'affiliated', is that relevant to the tragedy of a 13 year old dying? is it a reference to his involvement with a gang, or just knowing people from a gang

the warren commission really gave it to people assumed to be 'affiliated' with communists,, didn't they?

just saying that immediate focus on something that appears negative about the deceased is typical and strange to me,,

just my opinion

neither lost their life committing any crime,, so its tragic to those who aren't devils and have some soul....

or soldiers, mommas who allow that accept their kids deaths too

or police, mommas who allow that accept their kids deaths too

or attractive women, mommas who allow that accept the rapes that are a risk

laugh laugh

the American way, don't ASSOCIATE with anyone we deem criminal, or you are also a criminal

unless you are not a minority, or are a politician,,,

and if you have any association with anyone we deem criminal, you get whatever you have coming to you, and we are happy about that too,,,,

the civilized and superior culture that we are,,,,whoa

I have to agree with msharmony on this one.

Being "associated with" is not identical to "a member of".

Being family of a banger puts you in the same situation as the banger member.

Pure semantics. The drive-by killing the kid more than likely was a targeted hit.

A few years back my stepdaughter made friends with a then, 12 year old kid with an MS tat.

I insisted she never have any more contact with him just because association makes her and us a mark.

Being anywhere near a gang member puts one in danger of getting shot.

Being near a gang member or knowing a gang member does not make one a gang member.

So, the death of that 13-year-old does not equal the death of a gang member.
